Amana washer not spinning: what to check first

Your Amana washer may finish the cycle with wet clothes, hum without turning the basket, or stop with the lid locked. This page starts with the safe checks you can do from the outside, then shows what a technician tests when the washer still won't spin.

Straight answer

An Amana washer not spinning means the control is either holding back spin for safety, or the drive system can't turn the basket at speed. The most common no-tool cause is an uneven or overloaded load, especially bedding, one bulky item, or clothes packed tight around the basket.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Redistribute the load

Pause the washer, spread the clothes evenly around the basket, then run Drain & Spin. A single comforter, bath mat, heavy coat, or small load with one wet towel can make these washers shake, refill, and try to rebalance instead of reaching spin speed.

  2. Check the selected cycle and spin speed

Delicate, hand wash, low spin, or no spin settings leave more water in the load by design. If the clothes can handle it, choose Drain & Spin or a cycle with a higher spin speed.

  3. Look for standing water

If water is still in the tub, the washer will limit or stop spin. Check that the drain hose isn't kinked, shoved too far into the standpipe, taped tight at the drain opening, or sitting outside the required standpipe height range of 39 to 96 inches.

  4. Clean the lid strike area

If the Lid Lock light flashes, wipe the plastic strike on the lid and the lock opening with a damp cloth. Lint or detergent film can keep the lock from reading closed even when the lid looks shut.

  5. Cancel and restart the cycle

Hold Start or Pause until the washer cancels, then unplug it for a short reset and start Drain & Spin again. If it hums, clicks, or locks the lid but the basket doesn't move, stop testing and have the drive system checked.

Most front-load washers hide the drain pump filter behind a small panel at the lower front. Top-loaders usually have no user-reachable filter.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drive belt and pulleysThe technician tips the washer back, removes the belt cover, and checks whether the belt is broken, loose, glazed, or shedding black rubber dust. If the motor runs but the basket and pulley don't move, the belt path and pulley grip are checked before any electrical part is blamed.
Run capacitorWith the washer unplugged and the capacitor safely discharged, the capacitor is tested against the rating printed on its case. On Whirlpool-built Amana designs, the service sheet warns that a bad run capacitor can make the motor hum, fail to start, or turn slowly; an open or shorted capacitor is replaced.
Drive motorIn manual test mode, the technician checks whether the control sends motor power at the J2 connector, using the J2-4 to J2-6 and J2-4 to J2-5 checks called out on the machine tech sheet. With power removed, the motor windings are checked against the motor size table on the tech sheet instead of assuming one ohm range for every model.
Lid lock or lid switchThe lock is checked for a firm latch, a clean strike, and correct switch readings. On the Whirlpool-built Amana design in the tech sheet, the lid-closed switch is not a near 0-ohm check: lid closed reads 85 to 155 ohms at J6, and the lock switch reads 0 ohms only when locked. Readings outside the chart point to the lock, wiring, or control.
Shift actuator and splutchThe technician runs diagnostic or manual modes and watches whether the actuator shifts between agitate and spin. Basket speed faults such as F7E1 or shifter faults such as F7E5 can point here, especially if the cam, splutch teeth, or actuator arm don't move into position.

Common questions about appliance repair

Why is my Amana washer not spinning but it drains?

If it drains, the drain pump may be doing its job while the drive system still can't start spin. Common causes are an uneven load, a loose or broken belt, a bad lid lock, a weak run capacitor, or a shift actuator that didn't move into spin position.

Will unplugging my Amana washer reset the spin problem?

It can clear a stuck control state after a power interruption. It won't fix a broken belt, weak capacitor, bad lid lock, or stored basket speed fault that returns on the next cycle.

Why are the clothes wet if the washer did spin a little?

The washer may have sensed imbalance and reduced spin speed. It can also happen when low spin is selected, the drain hose is installed wrong, or water flows back into the tub after the pump shuts off.

Is this a lid lock problem?

A flashing Lid Lock light, a lid that won't lock, or a washer that fills and drains but won't begin wash or spin can point to the lid lock circuit. Clean the strike area first, then a technician can test the switch for continuity.

Is an older Amana washer worth fixing for no spin?

A belt, lid lock, capacitor, or actuator repair is often reasonable on a clean washer. If it's over 10 years old and needs a gearcase, control board, or several worn drive parts, many owners choose replacement.
