Oven and range problems and error codes

Ovens fail in predictable ways: an element, an igniter, a temperature sensor, a control board. Pick your symptom or code below. If you smell gas, leave the checks alone and call the gas utility first.

Repair it or replace it?

The rule most technicians use: if the repair would cost more than half of a comparable new unit and the appliance is past two-thirds of its typical life, replace it. A good repair company will say so on the phone.

Placement changes the math. A washer in a hot garage or a fridge in an unheated porch wears out years ahead of the same model in a kitchen, so tell the company where it sits.

Typical service lifeYears
Refrigerator10–13
Front-load washer10–11
Dryer12–13
Dishwasher9–10
Wall oven / range13–16

Hatched span is the upper end you shouldn't count on for a unit in a garage or other unconditioned space. Ranges are the manufacturer figures technicians work from, not a promise about your unit.

Common questions about appliance repair

My gas oven clicks but won't light. Is that dangerous?

Usually it's a weak igniter, which is a common part. If you smell gas when the oven is off, shut off the supply and call the gas utility before anything else.

What do F codes on an oven mean?

F codes are fault codes from the control. Many point to the temperature sensor or a stuck key on the touchpad, some to the control board. The guide for your brand's code says which.
