Dryer problems and error codes

A dryer that runs cold or takes forever is usually one of a few parts, or a vent that can't breathe. Start with the vent. Then pick your symptom or code below for what a technician would test next.

Repair it or replace it?

The rule most technicians use: if the repair would cost more than half of a comparable new unit and the appliance is past two-thirds of its typical life, replace it. A good repair company will say so on the phone.

Placement changes the math. A washer in a hot garage or a fridge in an unheated porch wears out years ahead of the same model in a kitchen, so tell the company where it sits.

Typical service lifeYears
Refrigerator10–13
Front-load washer10–11
Dryer12–13
Dishwasher9–10
Wall oven / range13–16

Hatched span is the upper end you shouldn't count on for a unit in a garage or other unconditioned space. Ranges are the manufacturer figures technicians work from, not a promise about your unit.

Common questions about appliance repair

My dryer runs but doesn't heat. Is that a big repair?

On electric dryers it's most often a heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat. On gas dryers it's often an igniter or the gas valve coils. A blocked vent causes the same symptom and blows thermal fuses, so check the vent before anything else.

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

Almost always airflow. A crushed transition hose or a long vent run packed with lint makes the dryer overheat. Replacing the fuse without fixing the vent just buys another failure.

Can a technician work on a stacked washer-dryer?

Yes. Say it's a stacked or all-in-one unit when you call so they plan for the access.
