Bosch fridge not making ice: what to check first

A Bosch refrigerator that stops making ice may still cool food and may still dispense water. This page walks through the simple checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the ice maker stays dead or runs too slowly.

Straight answer

A Bosch fridge not making ice usually means ice production is off, the freezer is too warm, the bin isn't seated, water flow is restricted, or the ice maker can't harvest or fill. Control lock can stop dispensing on dispenser models, but it doesn't turn off ice production by itself.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the ice maker switch and control lock

Look for a lock icon, an ice maker setting, or an ice production button in your manual. On freezer-mounted Bosch ice makers, lift the ice maker cover and press the ice maker button so the light is on. On dispenser models, use the control-panel button combination your manual shows to turn ice production back on.

  2. Make sure the freezer is cold enough

Put a refrigerator thermometer in the freezer and give it time to settle. Bosch recommends 0°F for the freezer, and ice production starts only after the freezer reaches the set temperature. If the actual temperature is warmer than the setting, solve the cooling problem first.

  3. Test water flow and the filter

If your model has a water dispenser, see if the water flow is strong. Replace the filter if it's older than 6 months, if the filter light is on, or if cubes were getting small or hollow before the ice stopped.

  4. Look for a frozen fill tube or ice jam

Remove the ice bin and look for loose cubes in the chute, bin, or visible fill area. Clear accessible ice with warm towels or a wooden spoon. Don't use a hair dryer, sharp tool, or your fingers in or under the ice maker.

  5. Reseat the ice bin and check the bin sensor area

Push the ice bin fully into place. Some Bosch ice makers use a level sensor or arm, and frost on the sensor area or a bin that isn't seated can make the fridge think the bucket is full.

  6. Try a short reset

Switch the appliance off, unplug it or switch off the breaker, wait 5 minutes, then restore power. If your manual shows a reset or test button, follow that procedure without reaching into or under the ice maker, then wait for the next ice cycle.

Water enters through a valve on the lower back and passes the filter. One line feeds the ice maker's fill tube; another runs up through the door hinge to the dispenser. Filter location varies by model.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall near the top
  2. Some models: on the ceiling or behind the crisper drawer
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Ice maker assemblyOn Bosch 800 freezer-mounted units covered by this procedure, the left button should show a solid green LED when the ice maker is on. Pressing the recessed test button for less than 3 seconds should start a harvest and fill test: the flex tray twists, returns home, then the valve fills the tray; no movement, a tray stuck upside down, grinding, or a cracked rectangular drive slot points to a failed tray, drive, or ice maker.
Freezer temperature and cooling systemCheck actual freezer temperature with a thermometer, not only the display. If it's above 10°F, the ice maker may not cycle; the tech then checks condenser airflow, door gasket seal, evaporator frost pattern, and defrost operation.
Water inlet valveConfirm the home water supply is within the pressure range in the Bosch manual and that the fill command reaches the valve during an ice maker test. With power off, compare the valve coil readings with the service data for that exact model; an open coil, loud buzz with no fill after a clear water path, leak-through, or debris-jammed valve calls for replacement.
Fill nozzle and fill tubeRun the ice maker fill test and listen for the valve. If the valve energizes but no water enters the mold, the technician checks the freezer fill nozzle and tube for ice, scale, or a displaced collar.
Door switch, level sensor, or control boardThe door switch is checked for proper state change and continuity because an open-door signal can stop ice and dispenser action. If the ice maker LED won't stay on, the bin-level sensor is clean and aligned, and the ice maker has proper power, the fault moves toward the ice maker electronics or main control board.

Common questions about appliance repair

Why does my Bosch refrigerator dispense water but make no ice?

The dispenser can work while the ice maker still has a separate problem. Check that ice production is on, the freezer is set to 0°F and getting cold, the bin is seated, and the fill path isn't frozen.

How do I reset a Bosch ice maker?

Many Bosch models can be reset by switching the appliance off, disconnecting power for 5 minutes, then restoring power. Some freezer-mounted 800 Series units also have a recessed test button near the ice maker light; use it only as the service procedure describes.

Can a water filter stop a Bosch ice maker?

Yes. A clogged or poorly seated filter can cut water flow enough to stop ice production, especially if the filter is older than 6 months or the cubes became small before the ice stopped.

How long should it take to make ice after a fix?

If the freezer is cold and the water path is working, give the refrigerator several hours to start dropping cubes. After a filter change or reset, it may take longer for the bin to look normal again.

Is a Bosch ice maker worth replacing?

Often, yes, if the refrigerator cools well and the failure is limited to the ice maker or valve. If the freezer also can't hold temperature due to sealed-system trouble on an older unit, a repair company may advise against a major repair.
