Bosch washer error codes: what each one means

This table covers Bosch washer error codes and display messages found in current support pages and US owner manuals. Use it to match the display to what the control detected, then try the safe first check. If a code points to a leak, motor, heater, sensor, wiring, or control issue, contact a repair company for a technician.

Reading the code

Bosch washer codes usually appear on the control display as E, F, H, a two part code, or an icon. After a simple cause is corrected, turn the washer off and unplug it for at least 30 seconds for a basic reset, then restart. CL or a child lock symbol is a status message rather than a fault, E32, F32, H:32, and E:60 -2B point to load imbalance, and some models use Temperature plus Finish in for about 3 seconds to turn child lock off.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a washer12
  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

Bosch washer error codes

Covers Bosch front load washer support pages and US manuals for compact 300, 500, and 800 Series style models; older displays may use E or F formats, while newer displays may show two part E or H formats.

30 codes

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
E18 / F18 / E:00 <-> -18The washer detected slow or blocked draining, often from a blocked pump, blocked drain path, kinked drain hose, or suds that slowed draining.Unplug the washer, let any hot water cool, then check the visible drain hose and household drain for kinks or blockage.Often a home check
E17 / F17 / F29The washer detected a fill problem, with inlet filters blocked, water pressure too low, or water supply time exceeded.Unplug the washer, turn off the water tap, then check that the supply hose is not kinked and the tap is fully open.Often a home check
E16 or E34 / F16 or F34The door is open or not locked properly, and some models may show a flashing door symbol for this condition.Unplug the washer, remove items caught at the door gasket, close the door until it latches, then restart.Often a home check
E23 / F23 / E:00 <-> -23The washer detected water in the base, a leak, or AquaStop hose activation.Needs a technician because AquaStop or water in the base can involve a leak near internal electrical parts; unplug the washer and turn off the water taps if it is safe.Usually a technician
E:30 / -80The washer detected a drain problem such as a blocked or kinked outlet hose, high drain connection, blocked pump, loose pump cap, or excess suds.Unplug the washer and check that the visible drain hose is not kinked, raised too high, or pushed into a blocked drain.Often a home check
E:30 / -10The washer detected low water pressure, blocked inlet filters, a turned off faucet, a kinked inlet hose, or a possible water level measurement fault.Unplug the washer and confirm the water taps are open and the inlet hoses are straight.Often a home check
E32 or H:32 / F32 or E:60 -2BThe unbalanced load detection system interrupted or reduced spin because the laundry was unevenly distributed.Pause the cycle if possible, redistribute the load with large and small items mixed together, then run a spin cycle again.Often a home check
E33 / F33The washer detected detergent foam from too much detergent or detergent that foamed too much for the load.Use less HE detergent on the next similar load and run an extra rinse if suds remain.Often a home check
E:36 -10The washer detected a drain path problem, including a blocked or kinked outlet, an outlet hose set too high, a blocked pump, or excess suds.Unplug the washer and check that the visible drain hose and drain pipe are not blocked, kinked, or installed too high.Often a home check
E:36 -25 -26The washer detected a blocked drain pump.Unplug the washer and check the visible drain hose and household drain before a technician checks the drain pump area.Often a home check
E:38 / -25 / -26The washer detected a blocked drain pump and may ask for drum cleaning before pump cleaning is needed.Unplug the washer, remove visible items from the drum, then try a drum cleaning cycle after the washer can drain.Often a home check
E80The washer detected a drive circuit fault.Needs a technician because the drive circuit must be diagnosed with internal electrical testing.Usually a technician
E:92 / -01The washer detected low water pressure or blocked inlet filters.Unplug the washer, turn off the water tap, then check the inlet hose for kinks and clean the hose screen if your manual shows it.Often a home check
H9E with water tap iconThe washer detected a hot water supply problem, often a closed hot tap, kinked hot hose, low hot water pressure, or clogged hose strainer.Unplug the washer, confirm the hot water hose is connected, the hot tap is open, and the hose is not pinched.Often a home check
E:10 / -00 / -10The pump for the intelligent dosing system is blocked.Switch the washer off and clean the intelligent dosing pump unit only as your manual shows; do not rinse or soak the pump unit.Often a home check
E:30 / -20The washer detected excess detergent, added water, or a possible solenoid valve fault.Turn off the water tap. If heavy suds are present, use less HE detergent next time and do not add water; if the code returns, have a technician check it.Often a home check
E19 / F19The washer detected that heating time was exceeded.Needs a technician because heating components and wiring require internal electrical diagnosis.Usually a technician
E20 / F20The washer detected unexpected heating during the cycle.Needs a technician because unexpected heating can involve the heater circuit, controls, or temperature sensing parts.Usually a technician
E25 / F25The washer detected a turbidity sensor issue.Needs a technician because the turbidity sensor is internal and must be tested or replaced safely.Usually a technician
E26 / F26The washer detected an analog pressure sensor issue.Needs a technician because the analog pressure sensor and its wiring are internal parts.Usually a technician
F27The washer detected a faulty pressure sensor.Needs a technician because the pressure sensor system needs internal diagnosis.Usually a technician
E28 / F28The washer detected a flow sensor issue.Needs a technician because the flow sensor and related wiring are internal parts.Usually a technician
E56The washer detected an unexpected communication error.Needs a technician because communication faults can involve control boards and internal wiring.Usually a technician
E:93The washer detected no hot water after the first cycle on models that monitor hot water supply.Unplug the washer, confirm both hot and cold hoses are connected, both taps are open, and the hot hose is not kinked.Often a home check
CLChild lock is active and the controls are locked.Hold the child lock button combination listed in your manual, often Temperature and Finish in for about 3 seconds on some models.Often a home check
Drum with water droplet iconThe drum with water droplet icon means drum cleaning is required.Run the drum cleaning cycle listed in the manual with the drum empty.Often a home check
Soap bubbles iconThe soap bubbles icon means the detergent dosage is too high.Use less HE detergent on the next similar load and run an extra rinse if suds remain.Often a home check
Pause / play iconA flashing pause/play icon means energy saving mode has activated.Touch Start/Pause to wake the display.Often a home check
Cold water tap symbolA cold water tap symbol on some models means the cold tap is off, the cold supply hose is kinked, the inlet strainer is clogged, or cold water pressure is too low.Unplug the washer, confirm the cold water tap is open, and check the cold inlet hose for kinks.Often a home check
Other fault codeAny other fault code means the control detected an operational fault not covered by the common code list.Unplug the washer for at least 30 seconds and restart once; if the same code returns, a technician should diagnose the fault.Usually a technician

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a Bosch washer error code?

Turn the washer off, unplug it for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it after you correct a simple cause such as a closed tap, kinked hose, unbalanced load, or door obstruction. If the same code returns, stop using the washer and contact a repair company.

Why does my Bosch washer code keep coming back after I clear it?

A repeating code usually means the control is still seeing the same condition, such as slow draining, low water flow, a leak, excess suds, or an internal sensor fault. Do not keep restarting cycles if water is leaking, the drum will not drain, or the code points to a motor, heater, pressure, flow, or control issue.

Are E codes and F codes the same on Bosch washers?

Often they are alternate display formats for the same fault, such as E18 and F18 for a drain fault or E23 and F23 for AquaStop activation. Newer models may also show two part formats such as E:30 -80, E:36 -10, E:60 -2B, H9E, or H:32.

Is CL an error code on a Bosch washer?

CL means child lock is active, so it is a status message rather than a fault. On some models, holding Temperature and Finish in for about 3 seconds turns it off.
