GE dishwasher not starting: what it means and how to fix it

You press Start on your GE dishwasher and nothing happens. It may still have lights, or it may look dead. This guide shows what to check from the front of the machine, then what a technician tests if the start command never reaches the wash system.

Straight answer

A GE dishwasher not starting means the control isn't being allowed to begin a cycle, or the machine has lost control power. The most common appliance-side cause is the door latch or door switch failing to tell the control that the door is closed.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset power from outside the dishwasher

If the panel is dark, check the kitchen breaker plus any under-sink GFCI or wall switch that feeds the dishwasher. Turn the breaker fully off for one minute, then back on; if it trips again, stop and call an electrician or repair company.

  2. Clear Control Lock, Delay Start, or Demo Mode

If the lights are on but buttons do nothing, look for a lock icon or a light by Lock or Heated Dry. Hold the lock key listed in your manual for several seconds, then cancel Delay Start or Demo Mode if the display shows hours such as 2H or 4H.

  3. Make the door prove it's closed

Move racks, tall pan handles, insulation, or cabinet trim that may keep the door from latching. The latch should give one firm click. A solid Start light that never changes when you open the door points toward a latch or door switch fault.

  4. Press Start the GE way

Pick a cycle, press and hold Start for 2 to 3 seconds, then close the door right away if your model has hidden controls. Some GE models cancel the command if the door isn't latched within a few seconds.

  5. Look for water left in the tub

If water is sitting in the tub, remove the lower rack and rinse the filter under hot water. A machine stuck in pre-drain may hum, drain, or refuse the next fill until the drain path is clear.

  6. Try the hot-water hum check on select GE models

On GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT, and ZDT models that hum but won't start, pour one pint of hot tap water into the bottom of the tub. Press Start and let it run for five minutes. If the sump float is stuck, this can wake it up.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Door latch assembly and door switchRemove the inner door with power off. The catch must depress both switches; each switch should read zero or nearly zero ohms when actuated, then open when released. A weak click, broken strike, or a Start light that doesn't react to the door is a bad tell.
Incoming power at junction boxWith the unit powered for testing, read about 115 VAC between black line and white neutral at the dishwasher junction box. Heat marks, loose wire nuts, or no voltage at the dishwasher move the fault to the supply circuit.
Thermal fuseOn electronic controls, this fuse sits by the control board with two wires attached. It should show continuity, zero or nearly zero ohms; an open fuse leaves the board without power.
User interface or main control boardIf supply voltage, fuse, and door switch inputs test good, use the tech sheet diagnostic mode or board status LED when present. Dead keys, random light patterns, or no Start response with other keys working point to the UI or board.
Timer or selector switchFor mechanical timer models, test timer contacts per the wiring diagram; many working timers fall in the 2000 to 3500 ohm range on Rx1000. Selector buttons should read infinity at rest, then zero ohms when that button is pressed.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a GE dishwasher that won't start?

Turn the dishwasher breaker fully off for one to ten minutes, then turn it back on. If it starts only after a reset, the control board may be locking up.

Why are lights on but my GE dishwasher won't start?

The board has power, so start with Control Lock, Delay Start, the door latch, and the Start button hold time. A door switch can fail even when the door feels closed.

What if there are no lights at all?

Check the breaker, GFCI, and any wall switch that controls the dishwasher. If it is hardwired with the breaker on, a technician should test the junction box first. After that come the fuse, UI, then board.

Can a dirty filter keep a GE dishwasher from starting?

Yes, if the last cycle left water in the tub. Clean the filter and look for a kinked drain hose; a stuck pre-drain can make the machine seem like it won't start.

Should I use warranty service for this problem?

Check your written warranty terms before any paid repair. If the unit is still within the covered term, start with the warranty process so the visit stays on record.

Still showing the problem after the checks?

Call and describe what you tried. You'll be connected with an independent repair company near you.
