GE washer dryer combo not draining: what to check first
You may see water sitting in the washer tub, very wet loads in a Profile all-in-one, or a cycle that stops before spin. This page shows the safe checks first, then the tests a technician uses when the pump won't clear water.

A GE washer dryer combo not draining means the washer side is unable to move water out through the drain path before the control times out. A common cause on GE stackable laundry centers is debris stuck at the pump or in the hose from the tub to the pump.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Run Drain/Spin once
Cancel the cycle, wait for the door or lid to unlock, then run Drain/Spin with no extra water added. If the pump only hums, grinds, or stays quiet while water sits in the tub, stop there.
- Check the drain hose position
Make sure the hose isn't kinked, crushed, or shoved far down the standpipe. On some GE Profile all-in-one setups, a low outlet can cause poor drain behavior, so set the hose exactly as the install guide for your model says.
- Clean the owner-accessible filter
If your model has an owner-accessible pump filter or lint filter, clean it with towels ready because water may spill. On GE Profile all-in-one units, very wet loads, longer dry times, or a drain-pump-filter message can point to a restricted drain area.
- Look for a standpipe backup
Watch the wall drain or standpipe during a drain attempt. If water rises back up at the house drain, the washer may be pumping but the home drain can't take the flow.
- Reduce an off-balance load
A load that bunches to one side can stop the unit before final spin, leaving heavy wet clothes behind. Remove part of the load, spread the rest, then try Drain/Spin again.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
- Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.
Common questions about appliance repair
Can I reset a GE washer dryer combo that won't drain?
A reset can clear a stalled cycle, but it won't remove a sock, coin, or lint wad from the drain path. Cancel the cycle, restore power, then run Drain/Spin once.
Why is there water in the lint filter on a GE Profile all-in-one?
Don't treat water in the lint filter by itself as proof of a bad pump. Clean the lint filter and the drain pump filter if your model has one. Check drain hose placement. Stop dry cycles if clothes or the tub stay wet after wash.
Does this apply to a GE stackable washer and dryer not draining?
Yes. On a laundry center, the dryer section doesn't drain wash water; the washer section has the drain pump, hoses, and control logic.
When should a technician be called?
Call a repair company if the accessible filter is clear, the drain hose is set right, and water still stays in the tub. Pump resistance checks and live voltage tests belong to a technician.
Is a newer GE Profile unit a warranty issue?
If the unit is still within the maker's warranty period, use the manufacturer service path before paying an independent company. Drain pump faults on newer all-in-one units may need authorized diagnosis.
Still showing the problem after the checks?
