GE dryer not drying: what to check before service

A GE dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp is usually short on airflow or heat. This page walks through the safe checks first, then shows what a technician tests inside the dryer.

Straight answer

A GE dryer not drying usually means the dryer can’t move enough hot air through the drum, or it isn’t making heat. The most common cause is a restricted exhaust path, often lint in the vent line or a crushed vent hose behind the dryer.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clean the lint screen and recheck the load

Pull the lint screen and wash off any softener film with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, then dry it before putting it back. Heavy towels, mixed loads, or packed drums can stay damp even when the dryer is working properly.

  2. Check airflow outside

Start a timed dry cycle and go to the outside vent hood. You should feel a strong stream of warm air, close to what you feel at the back of the dryer when the vent hose is off.

  3. Look behind the dryer

If you can move the dryer safely, check for a crushed silver flex hose or a long hose folded into a tight bend. That one smashed elbow behind the machine can add a lot of dry time.

  4. Try a short vent-off test

If the dryer is easy to reach, turn it off, pull the vent hose off the back, then run timed dry for a few minutes while you watch it. Strong warm air at the dryer but weak air outside points to a clogged house vent.

  5. Reset the electric dryer breaker

An electric dryer can tumble on one leg of power while the heater won’t work. Turn the double breaker fully off, then back on, and test again.

  6. Check the control lock

If the display shows a lock icon and the dryer won’t restart, the controls may be locked. On many GE controls, pressing and holding ECO DRY unlocks it, but use the button name in your owner’s manual if it differs.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust system and blower wheelA technician compares airflow at the dryer outlet with airflow at the outside hood, then checks the blower wheel for lint, small clothing, a loose sleeve, or wobble on the motor shaft. Weak air with a clean vent points back to the blower area.
Heating element assemblyWith power disconnected, the element is checked for continuity. On common GE electric layouts, one test is from the right terminal with the purple wire to the left terminal with the blue wire, then from the same purple-wire terminal to the left terminal with the yellow wire; continuity on both paths means the element is likely intact.
Terminal block power supplyOn an electric GE dryer, a technician checks voltage where the cord enters the dryer. Red to black should read 240 volts AC, black to white 120 volts, and red to white 120 volts; a missing leg can let the motor run with no heat.
High-limit thermostat and cycling thermostatWith power disconnected, each thermostat is isolated and checked for continuity. No continuity on a thermostat that should be closed points to a failed safety or temperature control, often after a vent restriction overheated the dryer.
Thermistor or moisture sensorThe thermistor is checked against the model’s service data, then the moisture sensor circuit is inspected if auto cycles end early or run too long. These are lower on the list after heat, airflow, and thermostats have been proven good.

Common questions about appliance repair

Why does my GE dryer run but not heat?

On an electric model, it may be missing one leg of power, or the heating element or thermostat has opened. The motor can still run while the heater stays off.

Does this apply to a GE washer dryer combo?

Some checks still apply, such as load size, lint care, airflow, and control settings. Combo units dry differently than a vented dryer, so a technician will use the model’s service sheet for heat-pump or condenser tests when basic checks don’t solve it.

Can I run the dryer with the vent hose off?

A short timed test with the hose off can help prove whether the house vent is restricted. Don’t leave it that way for normal drying, and stop if the laundry room gets hot, dusty, or damp.

Why are clothes warm but still damp?

Warm damp clothes usually mean heat is present but air is not leaving fast enough. Start with the lint screen, flex hose, outside hood, and the full vent run.

Should I replace the moisture sensor first?

Usually no. Moisture sensors can cause auto-cycle trouble, but restricted airflow, weak heat, and thermostat faults are checked first.
