GE refrigerator error codes: what each one means

This table covers common GE refrigerator front display messages and confirmed service diagnostic faults from published manuals and tech data. Use the first check for safe homeowner steps only, and use a technician when the code points to a sensor, fan, defrost, board, hot water, or sealed system fault.

Reading the code

On electronic dispenser models, codes flash on the control panel and may beep; service diagnostic codes may show as two digits in the FZ temperature window and two digits in the FF temperature window, so 00 and 01 reads as 0001. Unplug the refrigerator for a minute or two before homeowner checks, then restore power; older Electronic Monitor models can clear some messages with SYSTEM CHECK RESET after the condition is corrected. DE is demo mode, tC and tF are TurboCool and TurboFreeze status indicators, HRS is a Quick Thaw or Express Thaw hours indicator, and Sabbath mode is a setting rather than a part failure.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a refrigerator12
  1. Inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall near the top
  2. Some models: on the ceiling or behind the crisper drawer

GE refrigerator error codes

The front display codes apply to many electronic dispenser controls; the four digit service diagnostic rows come from service sheet 31-51962 for CFE28, CWE23, CYE22, DFE28, DFE29, GFD28, GFE26, GFE27, GFE28, GFE29, GNE26, GNE29, GYE22, PFD28, PFE28, PWE23, PYD22, PYE22, and ZWE23 model families.

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a GE refrigerator code?

Unplug for a minute or two, restore power, and on older Electronic Monitor models press SYSTEM CHECK RESET after fixing the condition. If a cooling, defrost, fan, board, or sensor code returns, a technician should check it.

Why does the code keep coming back?

A returning code means the control detected the same condition again, such as warm temperatures, a defrost problem, an icemaker issue, a stuck key, or a sensor problem. Use only the safe first check listed here, then contact a repair company if it returns.

Why do some GE codes have four digits?

Some French door models store service diagnostic faults as two digits in each temperature display. A technician reads 00 in one window and 01 in the other as 0001.

Are tC, tF, HRS, or Sabbath mode errors?

No. tC and tF mean TurboCool or TurboFreeze is running, HRS relates to Quick Thaw or Express Thaw hours, and Sabbath mode is a setting.

Still showing the problem after the checks?

Call and describe what you tried. You'll be connected with an independent repair company near you.
