Kenmore oven F10 code: what it means and what to check

Your Kenmore oven may be beeping, flashing F10, burning food, or showing the code after the oven is already off. This page explains what the code means, what you can check safely, and what a technician tests when the code comes back.

What the display shows
Straight answer

On most Kenmore ranges that use a plain F10 code, F10 means the electronic control has detected runaway oven temperature, or the sensor circuit is feeding it a bad temperature reading. The cause can be the oven temperature sensor probe, wiring or connector, or electronic control board. If the oven keeps heating after OFF, a stuck board relay is the safety concern.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Press OFF or CANCEL once

If the oven is only beeping and flashing, press OFF or CANCEL. If the display clears and the oven cools normally, watch it the next time you bake because F10 often comes back when a part is failing.

  2. Shut off power if it keeps heating

If a heating element glows, or a gas burner keeps heating, after you turn the oven off, turn off the range breaker. If flame or gas odor remains after power is off, leave the area and call emergency service. Leave the oven off until a technician checks it.

  3. Reset the control

Turn the range breaker off for 1 to 2 minutes, then turn it back on. This can clear a stored fault, but it doesn't prove the sensor or control board is good.

  4. Check the door and oven vents

Make sure the door closes fully and don't cover or block the oven vent path with foil, pans, liners, or trim. A blocked vent can cause heat and baking problems, but F10 still needs the sensor circuit and control checked if it returns.

  5. Notice when the code appears

F10 at room temperature points more toward the sensor circuit or control board. F10 during bake or self-clean can be a real overheat, especially if food burns fast or a bake or broil element stays on when it should be cycling off.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Oven temperature sensorDisconnect power, isolate the sensor, and read resistance across the two sensor terminals. At room temperature it should be near 1,080 to 1,100 ohms; less than 1,000 ohms, more than 1,300 ohms, or OL means the probe is bad.
Sensor circuit to the electronic oven controlWith the sensor plugged back into its connector, the technician reads the circuit from the control-board end. The reading should be close to the sensor-only reading; a large change or open reading points to a loose connector, heat-damaged wire, or pin fit issue.
Electronic oven control boardIf the sensor and sensor circuit read correctly, then F10 returning during bake or clean points to the board. Burn marks, a cooked relay area, or an element that stays powered when the control is off are bad signs.
Bake and broil relay outputsA technician checks whether the board is sending power to the bake or broil element when it shouldn't. A stronger field clue is an element that stays on when the control is off, or a broil element that does not cycle normally in bake.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will resetting the breaker fix a Kenmore oven F10 code?

It may clear the display for a while. If the code returns, the sensor circuit or control board needs testing.

Is it safe to use the oven after an F10 code?

Don't use it if an element stays on after OFF, if the oven keeps getting hotter, or if food burns fast at a normal setting. Turn off the breaker and have it checked.

Why does F10 show when the oven is cold?

That usually means the control is being fed a bad temperature signal. The sensor probe, its connector, or the electronic control board can cause that.

Why is the broiler on during bake?

Some ovens use the broil element during preheat or cycle it during bake, but it shouldn't stay on hard enough to burn the upper surface of food. If the broil element stays on when it should be off, a stuck control-board relay is a likely fault.

Can I order one Kenmore F10 part for any model?

No. Kenmore ranges were built by different makers, so parts do not all match. Use the full model number from the range tag before ordering anything.
