LG refrigerator error codes: what each one means

Use this list to match the letters or numbers on an LG refrigerator display with the part or condition the control detected. Start with the safe first check shown, and stop if a code points to sealed system, compressor, wiring, or control diagnosis. Some messages are status displays rather than faults.

Reading the code

LG refrigerator codes appear on the exterior or interior temperature control panel, while some analog models show LED patterns instead of letters. To try a reset, unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes and restart it; if the same fault comes back, the control is still seeing a problem. Confirmed status messages include OFF or OF F for demo mode, Sb for Sabbath mode, 88 for a normal diagnostic display, and Lo or HI for room temperature warnings. Demo mode can be turned off on many models by opening a refrigerator door and holding Refrigerator and Ice Plus together for five seconds, while Sabbath mode uses the Freezer and Wi Fi buttons for three seconds on models with that combo.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a refrigerator12
  1. Inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall near the top
  2. Some models: on the ceiling or behind the crisper drawer

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG refrigerator error code?

Yes. Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes, plug it back in, and check the display. If the same fault returns, the control is still detecting a problem.

Why does IF, FF, or rF come back after defrosting?

The fan may still be blocked by frost, or the fan motor, sensor, wiring, or control may have failed. Do not remove panels; have a technician check it if a door seal and visible vents look normal.

Are OFF, Sb, and 88 errors?

No. OFF is demo or display mode, Sb is Sabbath mode, and 88 can be a normal diagnostic display.

Why do some models show Er, E, or r before the code?

Prefixes vary by model. Match the main letters or numbers after the prefix, then use the manual for model specific button steps.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
