Maytag dishwasher won't start: what it means and what to check
You press Start on a Maytag dishwasher and nothing runs, or the Start/Resume light just blinks after you close the door. This page walks through the simple checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the machine still won't start.

A Maytag dishwasher won't start when the control isn't getting a valid start condition, such as power, a closed-door signal, water supply, or unlocked controls. The single most common repair cause is a failed door latch or latch switch, especially when Start/Resume flashes after you close the door.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Check power and try a reset
If the display is dark, check the breaker or the plug if yours is cord-connected. Press Cancel, then turn power off for 1 minute before restoring it. A reset helps when the control has locked up; it won't fix a blown fuse.
- Make sure the door is really latching
Close the door until you feel a firm click. Pull out the lower rack and reinstall it if it was turned around, since a backward rack can keep the door from latching.
- Look for Control Lock or sleep mode
Look for a lock icon. On many Maytag models, locked controls make the lock light stay on or flash three times when you press a pad; hold the model's lock key as the manual says.
- Cancel Delay Start
If Delay Wash was set, the dishwasher can look like it ignored Start. Press Cancel/Drain to clear the delay, then choose the cycle again.
- Confirm the water supply is on
Some Maytag dishwashers won't begin the cycle if water is turned off or can't be detected. Check the shutoff valve under the sink if it's easy to reach without moving the dishwasher.
- Press Start, then close the door right away
After choosing a cycle, press Start/Resume, then close the door right away. Many models give you about a 3-second window; if the control doesn't see the latch close, Start/Resume blinks instead of running.
Conditions that make this more likely
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.
Common questions about appliance repair
Will a reset fix a Maytag dishwasher that won't start?
Sometimes. A reset can clear a stalled control or a bad setting, but it won't repair a failed latch switch, blown thermal fuse, bad keypad, or failed board.
Why does the Start/Resume light blink?
On many Maytag dishwashers, that means the control is waiting for a valid door-closed signal. If you press Start and close the door within the short window, yet the light still blinks, the latch assembly is a strong suspect.
Can the water supply keep it from starting?
Yes. Maytag notes that some dishwashers won't start a cycle if water isn't detected, so check the shutoff valve before calling for repair.
Is this still a warranty issue?
Check your Maytag paperwork with the model and serial number before opening any panels. If coverage is active, use the service path in the warranty terms.
Should I replace the control board first?
Usually no. A bad latch, blown thermal fuse, or failed keypad can look like a bad board; a technician should prove power into the board and the proper outputs before condemning it.
Still showing the problem after the checks?
