Maytag refrigerator ice maker not working: why it’s not making ice

You open the ice bin and there’s little or nothing in it, even though the refrigerator still seems cold. Sometimes the door water works, which makes this more confusing. This guide walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the Maytag ice maker still won’t fill or harvest.

Straight answer

A Maytag refrigerator ice maker that isn’t working usually has one of three faults: it is turned off, it isn’t getting enough water, or it is too warm to cycle. The most common simple cause is the ice maker arm, switch, or control being off or paused by accident.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Make sure the ice maker is turned on

Check the wire arm, slide switch, or control-panel ice setting for your model. Maytag lists an accidentally turned-off ice maker as a common reason for no ice, so start here before moving the refrigerator or replacing parts.

  2. Check the actual freezer temperature

Set the freezer to 0°F. Maytag says ice production can stop when the freezer is above 5°F, so give it time to cool after any setting change.

  3. Check the filter and water flow

If the filter is older than six months, the filter light is on, or the dispenser stream is weak, replace the filter or reinstall it so it locks in place. A clogged or poorly seated filter can cut water flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker.

  4. Look for jammed cubes or a frozen tray

Pull the ice bin out and look for cubes wedged near the shutoff arm, ejector fingers, or bin chute. Use a plastic utensil, not metal, and let stubborn ice melt rather than prying hard.

  5. Power-cycle the refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute, then plug it back in. If the ice maker was stuck mid-cycle, this can reset it; Maytag says to wait a couple of hours before checking for new ice.

  6. Check the visible water line

If you can see the 1/4-inch supply tube behind the refrigerator without forcing the unit out, look for a kink or a tube pinched against the wall. Don’t disconnect tubing unless you’re set up to shut the water off and catch spills.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Water supply and fill tubeThe technician checks the supply pressure and looks for a steady stream; Maytag lists 20 psi as the minimum for the valve and 30 to 120 psi as the normal supply range. The ice maker fill tube is checked for an ice plug by disconnecting the ice-maker line at the valve and confirming air or water can pass to the mold.
Water inlet valveDuring the harvest fill portion, the technician checks for 120 VAC at the ice-maker valve coil; the fill call is short, often about 5 to 7 seconds. Voltage present with no water points to a bad valve, blocked valve screen, or blocked fill tube; no voltage points back toward the ice maker module or control circuit.
Ice maker assemblyA common split test is to add water to the mold and wait for a cycle. If it freezes and dumps but never refills, the mold thermostat and harvest motor may be working while the fill contact or module is failing; if it never dumps, the ice maker assembly itself is the usual suspect.
Ice maker thermostat or bin sensorThe technician verifies the temperature at the ice maker, not just the door display. If the ice maker area is too warm, the internal thermostat may never close for harvest; if the sensor reports a full bin or bad temperature, the control can stop ice production.
Control board or ice-room fanOn models with an ice room, the technician checks that the small fan is moving cold air to the ice maker area and that the board is sending the proper outputs. If the valve, fill tube, and ice maker test good, a failed board becomes more likely.

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a Maytag refrigerator ice maker?

If your model has a reset button, press and hold it as your manual describes. If it doesn’t, unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute, then plug it back in and wait a couple of hours for ice production to restart.

Why does the water dispenser work but the ice maker doesn’t?

The dispenser and ice maker can use different valve outlets. Door water can look normal while the ice-maker fill tube is iced shut, the ice-maker valve coil is bad, or the ice maker module is not sending the short fill signal.

Will changing the water filter fix a Maytag refrigerator that is not making ice?

It can, especially if the filter is older than six months, the filter light is on, or the dispenser stream is slow. If water flow is strong and the ice maker still won’t fill, the filter is less likely to be the main fault.

Is it worth replacing the ice maker assembly?

If the refrigerator cools well and the water valve tests good, replacing the ice maker assembly often makes sense. If the refrigerator also has cooling problems or multiple failed parts, a technician should help weigh the repair against the age and type of refrigerator.

Is an ice dispenser problem the same as an ice maker problem?

No. If there is ice in the bin but it won’t come out the door, the problem is usually in the dispenser, auger, chute, or door switch. If the bin is empty, focus on ice production first.
