Samsung refrigerator freezer not working: what it means and what to check

Your Samsung refrigerator may have lights and a working display, but the freezer is warm, ice cream is soft, or both compartments feel wrong. This page shows the safe checks to do first, then the parts a technician tests when the freezer still won't cool.

Straight answer

A Samsung refrigerator freezer not working usually means the freezer section isn't getting cold air, has cooling turned off, or has a fault in the airflow, defrost, fan, sensor, control, or sealed system. The single most common repair cause is evaporator ice buildup that blocks the fan and vents, often tied to a defrost sensor or drain problem.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Look for Cooling Off mode

If the display shows OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF, scrolling temperature bars, or Demo, cooling is turned off even though the lights and panel still work. Turn Cooling Off mode off using the steps for your exact panel type, since the button pattern changes by model.

  2. Power cycle and watch for an error code

If an error code is showing, take a photo before you reset anything. Unplug the refrigerator or turn it off at the breaker for 2 minutes, power it back on, then watch the display during startup because a returning code points to a part fault.

  3. Give temperature changes enough time

After changing the set temperature, the display can take up to 4 hours to show the new setting and the cabinet can take up to 28 hours to reach it if the doors stay closed. If food is spoiling or the display keeps blinking after that, treat it as a real cooling problem.

  4. Clear the vents and check the loading

Move food at least 2 inches away from the rear air vents in the freezer and fresh food sections. Samsung also says the refrigerator cools more steadily when it's at least two thirds stocked, because less warm air enters each time the door opens.

  5. Check the door seals

Wipe the gaskets with a damp cloth and mild dish soap, then close the door on a paper bill and pull. A good seal gives slight drag; a bill that slides out easily, frost near the gasket, or a warped seal means warm air is leaking in.

  6. Check clearance and heat around the refrigerator

Leave 2 inches of space at the back, sides, and upper area so heat can leave the cabinet. Keep the refrigerator out of direct sun and away from ovens, cooktops, or very cold spaces below 55°F, since Samsung notes those conditions can hurt cooling.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

Garages and unheated rooms are hard on this part

A washer, dryer or second refrigerator in a garage sees summer heat well above room temperature in the South and Southwest, and freezing temperatures in northern winters. Control boards, compressors and pumps age faster in both. A refrigerator in a cold garage can also stop running its compressor, which lets the freezer warm up. Tell the repair company where the appliance sits.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Evaporator fan and iced evaporatorThe technician checks for a fan that sounds like a card in bicycle spokes, then goes silent as ice reaches the blade. With the cover off, a solid ice mass on the evaporator or fan shroud points to a defrost or drain fault rather than just a bad fan motor.
Defrost sensor or thermistorWith power off, the sensor can be checked for resistance at the board so the reading includes the wiring. Samsung thermistors are about 5 kΩ at 77°F, and one defrost circuit check calls for more than 15,000 ohms between the listed control board pins when the evaporator is iced; a low reading in that condition points to a failed defrost sensor.
Condenser fan motorThe condenser fan by the compressor should run when the compressor is running. A silent rear fan with a very hot compressor, blocked blades, a blade that won't turn by hand, failed continuity, or missing DC voltage from the control points to a fan or control problem.
Main control boardAfter the refrigerator completes its startup test, the board can be checked at the control connectors for DC outputs. One Samsung board test lists 13.2 VDC on the purple wire at pin 6, 5 VDC on the pink wire at pin 3, and 13.2 VDC on the white wire at pin 2 using the blue wire at pin 4 as reference; missing outputs mean the board has failed.
Inverter board and compressor circuitIf lights and fans work but the compressor never starts, the technician checks the inverter board LED and the compressor feed before calling the compressor bad. A blinking inverter LED is read as a fault pattern, while a normal board with a nonstarting compressor moves the diagnosis toward the sealed system.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a Samsung refrigerator freezer not working?

A reset can clear a software glitch, a stuck display, or a fault after a power outage. If the same code returns within a few hours, the refrigerator is reporting a hardware fault that needs testing.

How do I know if my Samsung is in Cooling Off mode?

The display may show OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF, scrolling bars, or Demo. In that mode the lights and controls work, but the compressor and cooling system stay off.

Why is only the freezer warm while the refrigerator seems okay?

That often points to airflow trouble in the freezer, such as an iced evaporator fan, blocked vents, or a defrost fault. A technician will usually look behind the freezer rear panel before blaming the compressor.

Can dirty coils make a Samsung freezer stop working?

Yes. Dust, lint, and pet hair on the condenser coils make the compressor run hot and reduce cooling, so cleaning accessible coils is worth doing before parts are replaced.

What if the water dispenser is not working too?

If the whole refrigerator is warm or in Cooling Off mode, fix the cooling or mode issue first. If cooling is normal and only water has stopped, that is usually a separate water supply, filter, dispenser, or valve problem.
