Whirlpool dishwasher not cleaning: what it means and what to check
Your Whirlpool dishwasher may fill, count down, open the soap cup, and still leave food or film on the dishes. This guide walks through the safe checks first, then explains when the wash pump, latch, fill valve, or control needs a technician.

A Whirlpool dishwasher that isn't cleaning usually has poor water movement through the spray arms, either from a clogged filter or a wash pump that isn't circulating water. The single most common cause is a dirty filter or plugged spray-arm holes, especially when the machine still fills and drains.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Clean the filter in the tub bottom
Pull out the lower rack and remove the round filter in the floor of the dishwasher, following the manual for your model. Wash it with warm soapy water and use a soft brush on stuck food. For fill-but-no-spray complaints, filter and spray-arm cleaning is reported to solve about half of cases.
- Check both spray arms
Spin each arm by hand. It should turn smoothly, with no scraping or tight spot. Clear each small jet with a toothpick, because one seed or glass chip can make the arm stall and leave the upper rack dirty.
- Reload so water can hit the dishes
Face dirty surfaces down and toward the spray arms. Keep tall pans, cutting boards, and bowls from blocking the arm path. Black or gray marks can mean items were packed too close together.
- Run hot water at the sink first
Run the nearest sink hot for at least 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher. Whirlpool service data calls for 120°F water entering the machine, and a cold start can make detergent work poorly.
- Use dishwasher detergent and rinse aid
Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. One pack is usually enough for a normal load, while old clumped powder may not dissolve right. Rinse aid helps cut mineral film, especially where hard water scale builds up.
- Try the door latch symptom check
Start a cycle, let it fill, then press firmly on the door near the latch without forcing it. If the wash suddenly starts, the latch or strike may not be closing the door switch well. Stop there and have it tested.
Conditions that make this more likely
Hard water makes this more likely
Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Should I reset a Whirlpool dishwasher that isn't cleaning?
You can turn power off at the breaker for a few minutes, then try a normal cycle. If it works only for a few loads or still fills without spraying, the reset didn't fix the cause.
Why does the soap dispenser open if the dishwasher isn't washing?
On many Whirlpool designs, the control can keep advancing the cycle even when the wash motor isn't moving water. The soap cup may open on time, but the detergent just sits there or runs down the door.
Is this usually the control board?
Usually no. If the control is sending voltage to the wash pump, the board thinks the motor is running, so the pump or sump and motor assembly is more likely.
Can I keep using it if dishes are coming out dirty?
It's better to stop and check the filter, spray arms, and fill level. Running repeated failed cycles can bake detergent film onto dishes and may leave food packed deeper in the sump.
Is the water inlet valve worth cleaning?
A homeowner can check that the water supply is on, but a clogged inlet valve is normally replaced, not cleaned. Cleaning a valve can leave it prone to sticking open later.
