Whirlpool oven not heating: what it means and what to check

Your Whirlpool oven may turn on, show a bake setting, or even run the clock while the cavity stays cold. On gas ranges, the surface burners may still work while the oven will not light. This page helps you separate a simple power or door issue from a failed igniter, bake element, sensor, or control board.

Straight answer

A Whirlpool oven not heating means the bake heat circuit is not turning energy into oven heat, or the oven is losing the heat it makes. The most common failed part is the bake igniter on a gas Whirlpool range or the bake element on an electric Whirlpool range.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the breaker first

Look for a breaker handle sitting between On and Off, then reset it fully. An electric range can act strange when one side of the 240 volt supply is missing, so the clock may work while the oven will not heat.

  2. Look for outlet or cord damage you can see

If you can see the outlet or plug without moving the range, look for dark marks, melted plastic, or a burned smell. Stop there and call an electrician or a repair company if you see heat damage.

  3. Check the door seal and the sensor position

The gasket should stay seated around the oven opening, and the door has to close squarely. The temperature sensor should point into the oven at about a 90 degree angle, away from the wall and any element.

  4. For an electric oven, compare bake and broil

Set bake and watch whether the lower bake heat comes on. Some Whirlpool bake elements are hidden under the oven floor, so if broil heats well while bake only warms to about 125 to 150 degrees, the hidden bake element or its circuit is a likely repair.

  5. For a gas oven, watch for ignition behavior

If the cooktop burners work but the oven will not light, the bake igniter is a common failure. If you smell gas, turn the oven off, leave the area safe, and call for service.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Gas bake igniterA technician calls for bake and watches the igniter at the burner tube. If it never glows, glows weakly, or glows while the burner never lights after the orifice is clear, the igniter is suspect before the gas safety valve.
Electric bake elementWith bake on, the element should receive 240 VAC across its two terminals. With power off and one wire removed, a good bake element on the tested Whirlpool range reads about 20 to 25 ohms, and a reading outside that range points to a failed element.
Terminal block and incoming powerAt the terminal block, a technician checks 120 VAC from white to black, 120 VAC from white to red, and 240 VAC from red to black. Burned terminals, broken wires, or missing voltage points to supply, cord, or terminal block trouble rather than a bad oven part.
Oven temperature sensorThe sensor is checked at its connector with power off. A normal room temperature reading is about 1,000 to 1,200 ohms, often near 1,080 ohms, while a reading far outside that range means the sensor is bad.
Main oven controlOn some Whirlpool electric ranges, the bake output is checked across P27 and P42 while bake is called, with 240 VAC expected. Another Whirlpool board test uses CON2 pin 1 blue to CON4 pin 3 red with white stripe during broil, and no 240 VAC there with a good sensor points to a failed control.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Whirlpool oven that will not heat?

You can reset power at the breaker, then try bake again. If the same no-heat symptom returns, a reset did not fix the failed heat circuit.

Why does my Whirlpool gas oven not heat when the burners work?

That points away from the main gas supply and toward the oven bake circuit. The bake igniter is the usual suspect because the safety valve will not open unless the igniter circuit is working properly.

Why does broil work but bake does not?

On an electric Whirlpool range, broil and bake use different heat paths. If broil gets hot and bake stays cold, a technician will test the bake element, bake wiring, and bake relay output.

Is the bake element supposed to glow red?

An exposed electric bake element should glow when it heats. Many Whirlpool ranges use a hidden bake element under the oven floor, so lack of a visible red loop from the front does not prove the element is off.

Should I keep using the oven if it smells like gas?

No. Turn the oven off, avoid creating sparks or flames, and have the gas oven checked before trying it again.
