Amana fridge not cooling: what it means and what to check
If your Amana refrigerator is warm, start with the simple things you can see from the kitchen. This page explains the common owner checks, then the parts a technician tests when the fridge still won’t get cold.

An Amana fridge not cooling means the refrigerator can’t move enough heat out of the cabinet, so temperatures rise in the fresh-food section, the freezer, or both. A dirty or blocked condenser area is one common cause, especially in dusty, greasy, or pet-heavy homes.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Confirm power and the outlet
Make sure the cord is plugged into a grounded 3-prong outlet and that the outlet isn’t controlled by a wall switch. If the display is dark, check the home breaker or plug a small lamp into the outlet.
- Check the controls
Make sure cooling is turned on and the temperature controls are near the middle setting. If you change the setting, give the refrigerator 24 hours to react before judging the result.
- Look for demo or showroom mode
Some Amana display models can enter a showroom mode where the lights and display work while cooling stays off. If the word “Showroom” is lit, use the model’s use and care guide to turn that mode off.
- Move heat away from the refrigerator
A refrigerator placed close to an oven, radiator, or other heat source has to work harder. If the cabinet sides feel hot and the room setup changed recently, heat around the unit may be part of the problem.
- Clean the condenser area
Unplug the refrigerator, pull it out carefully if needed, then vacuum the grille and any accessible coil area you can reach without removing service panels or disturbing water lines. Check the use and care guide for your model because some condenser designs don’t need owner cleaning and some cleaning is left to a technician.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall near the top
- Some models: on the ceiling or behind the crisper drawer
Conditions that make this more likely
Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think
Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.
Garages and unheated rooms are hard on this part
A washer, dryer or second refrigerator in a garage sees summer heat well above room temperature in the South and Southwest, and freezing temperatures in northern winters. Control boards, compressors and pumps age faster in both. A refrigerator in a cold garage can also stop running its compressor, which lets the freezer warm up. Tell the repair company where the appliance sits.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.
Common questions about appliance repair
Can I reset an Amana fridge that isn’t cooling?
You can unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in and check that cooling is turned on. A reset may clear a control glitch, but it won’t fix dirty coils, a dead fan, or a bad start relay.
How long should I wait after changing the temperature setting?
Wait 24 hours after a control change. Opening the doors often during that time will slow the pull-down.
Why is the freezer cold but the refrigerator section warm?
That often points to an airflow problem, such as an evaporator fan issue, frost buildup, or blocked air path between the freezer and fresh-food section. A technician checks the fan and looks for frost patterns behind the freezer rear wall.
Is it the compressor if the fridge is warm?
Sometimes, but don’t start there. Dirty coils, fan trouble, and the compressor start relay are checked first because they can stop cooling while the compressor itself is still usable.
Should I repair an older Amana refrigerator?
If it only needs coils cleaned, a fan, a thermostat, or a start relay, repair often makes sense. If it’s more than 10 years old and needs compressor or sealed-system work, replacement is often the better path.
