Bosch oven not heating: what to check and when it needs repair

Your Bosch oven may turn on, show the clock, accept a temperature, or even run the fan while the cavity stays cold. This page walks through the safe checks you can do from the front of the oven, then shows what a technician tests when the fault is inside the heating circuit.

Straight answer

A Bosch oven not heating usually means the oven either is not starting a real heat call, is missing the right power to the heating circuit, has a failed heat-making part, or on a gas range cannot light the burner. A common repair cause is a failed heat-making part: the bake element or convection element on electric models, or the bake igniter on gas models.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the breaker the right way

Turn the oven breaker fully off, then back on. Many electric ovens can light the display while one line leg is missing and the elements cannot get full 208 or 240 volt power, so don't judge by the clock alone.

  2. Set a plain bake cycle

Pick Bake or Convection Bake, set a real temperature, then press Start. Clear Delay Start, Delay Cook, or an oven timer if someone may have bumped those buttons; a delayed or finished timed setting can leave the oven looking on while it doesn't heat.

  3. Compare bake and broil

Try Broil for a short test while watching through the door. If broil heats while bake stays cold, the fault is usually in the bake circuit rather than the whole oven.

  4. Look for obvious heat-part failure

With the oven cool, look at any exposed element for a split, blister, or burned spot. On a gas Bosch range, watch from the front during bake: a glow that never becomes a blue flame points to a weak bake igniter.

  5. Stop after one power reset

A breaker reset can clear a stuck control state. If the oven still won't heat after one reset, repeated resets won't fix a failed element, igniter, sensor, or relay.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Bake igniter, gas modelsCommand Bake and listen for the control relay click. A technician then checks for line voltage at the igniter circuit and, when needed, igniter current draw. Voltage with no glow, or a glow that never lights the burner, usually puts the igniter or its wiring ahead of the valve.
Bake or convection elementWith power disconnected, isolate the element leads and check continuity through the element. An open circuit, a cracked sheath, or a burnt terminal means the element has failed.
240-volt supply and terminal blockOn electric ovens, a technician verifies proper voltage at the terminal block or junction box before blaming parts. A missing line leg, heat-damaged terminal, or loose connection can leave lights and controls on while the elements stay cold.
Oven temperature sensorInspect the probe in the oven cavity for damage, then test sensor resistance from the connector against the tech sheet for the oven temperature. An open, shorted, out-of-range sensor, or a sensor lead damaged by heat, can keep the control from reading oven temperature correctly.
Control relay or electronic controlIf the heat part, sensor, and supply test good, the technician checks for output voltage from the bake or convection relay during a heat call. No output after the relay should close, or a board that never commands the relay, moves the fault to the control.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Bosch oven that is not heating?

You can turn the breaker fully off, wait a minute, then turn it back on. If the oven still accepts settings yet stays cold, a reset has done all it can.

Why does the display work when the oven is cold?

The clock and controls can run on part of the power supply. Electric heating elements need the full two-leg 208 or 240 volt supply, so a breaker or wiring issue can look like a bad oven part.

What if broil works but bake doesn't?

That split is a strong clue. On a gas Bosch range, suspect the bake igniter; on an electric Bosch, the bake element or its relay is next to test.

Is this different on gas and electric Bosch ovens?

Yes. Gas models use an igniter and burner for bake, while electric ovens use heating elements, including a convection element on some models.

Should I use Bosch service if it's under warranty?

If coverage may still apply, check the model and serial number before scheduling any paid repair. Bosch can confirm coverage terms for that appliance.
