Frigidaire washer error codes: what each one means

This table covers Frigidaire top-load, front-load, and laundry-center washer codes found in owner guides and tech sheets. Match the code on the display, or the blink pattern on no-display models, to the plain meaning and start with the safe check listed here.

Reading the code

Most Frigidaire washers show the code on the digital display, while some laundry-center models without a display use the Start/Pause light, with red blinks for the first digit and green blinks for the second digit. To clear a current code, turn the washer off, unplug it for one minute, then restart; on some laundry centers, holding Wash Temp and Cancel for 15 seconds can recall the last code, and diagnostic mode can clear stored history. CL is usually a Control Lock status rather than a failed part.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a washer12
  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

Frigidaire washer error codes

Newer top-load models often use E1 through E5 plus CL and F codes, while many front-load and laundry-center models use E11, E21, E41, and related E codes.

43 codes

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
E1 / 1 / E11The washer is filling too slowly or not filling at all.Unplug the washer. Make sure both faucets are fully open and hoses are straight. If you clean inlet screens, turn the water off first and reconnect the hoses before turning it back on.Often a home check
E2 / 2 / E21The washer is draining too slowly or the drain pump area is restricted.Unplug the washer, then straighten the drain hose, check the standpipe height, and clear any visible drain restriction without removing panels.Often a home check
E3 / 3 / E41The control thinks the lid or door is open, or the door switch is not being seen as closed.Unplug the washer, remove anything blocking the lid or door, close it firmly, and restart the cycle.Often a home check
E4 / 4The washer detected an out-of-balance load during spin.Pause the cycle, unplug the washer, redistribute the load evenly, and make sure the washer is level and firm on the floor.Often a home check
E5 / 5The washer is not level.Unplug the washer, then check that it sits level and is not leaning back.Often a home check
CLThe lid was open too long while Control Lock was active, so this is usually a status message.Turn the washer off, unplug it for one minute, then deactivate Control Lock using the model instructions.Often a home check
Fd / E42The lid or door lock did not lock, unlock, or report its position correctly.Needs a technician because the lid or door lock device and its wiring are checked inside the washer.Usually a technician
F2 / C9The main control board has failed or the control circuit is not operating correctly.Needs a technician because the electronic control board or its wiring must be diagnosed inside the washer.Usually a technician
F8 / E31 / E32The water level or pressure sensor failed, is out of calibration, or is giving the control an invalid reading.Needs a technician because the water level sensor or pressure switch circuit is tested inside the washer.Usually a technician
E35The pressure sensor reports too much water in the washer.Turn off the water to the washer and contact a technician because overfill can involve the inlet valve, pressure system, or control.Usually a technician
E13The control detected a water leak in the tub area or an air leak in the pressure sensing system.Unplug the washer and turn off the water, then check for visible leaks at the fill hoses and around the washer without removing panels.Often a home check
EF2The washer detected too much soap or oversudsing.Use less high efficiency detergent and run a rinse and spin cycle after the suds settle.Often a home check
E38The air trap for the water level system is clogged or restricted.Needs a technician because the air trap and pressure hose path are internal checks.Usually a technician
E23 / E24The control detected a drain triac or drain circuit sensing fault.Needs a technician because the drain pump control circuit is on the control board.Usually a technician
E43The control tried to lock the lid but did not detect a successful lock.Needs a technician because the lid lock command and control output must be checked inside the washer.Usually a technician
E44 / E45 / E46The control detected a door or lid closed sensing, lock sensing, or lock command sensing problem.Needs a technician because the door or lid sensing circuit must be checked at the lock and control.Usually a technician
E49 / E4AThe lid closed and lid locked signals do not agree, or the lid lock control circuit is sensing a fault.Needs a technician because the lid lock sensing and control triac circuits are internal electrical checks.Usually a technician
E52 / E59The control is not getting a valid speed signal from the drive motor tachometer.Needs a technician because motor speed feedback is tested at the motor and control circuits.Usually a technician
E51 / E53 / E54The washer detected a motor control, relay, speed, or control-voltage fault, depending on the model.Needs a technician because the motor control, speed, voltage, and related wiring checks are inside the washer.Usually a technician
E55The washer detected motor underspeed or a drive system that can't hold the expected speed.Needs a technician because the drive system must be tested for motor, inverter, and control faults.Usually a technician
E57 / E58The inverter or motor phase is drawing too much current.Needs a technician because high current faults require motor, inverter, and wiring diagnosis.Usually a technician
E5AThe motor control heat sink became too hot, often during a motor overload condition.Needs a technician because the motor control has overheated and the drive system must be diagnosed.Usually a technician
E5CThe control detected voltage that is too high.Needs a technician because the control voltage circuit must be tested inside the washer.Usually a technician
E5D / E5E / E5FThe motor control is not communicating correctly or is repeatedly resetting.Needs a technician because communication between the motor control and main control must be checked inside the washer.Usually a technician
E67 / E68 / E69The washer detected a heater relay fault, heater circuit fault, or current leakage in the heater circuit.Needs a technician because heater relays, heater wiring, and leakage checks are internal electrical tests.Usually a technician
E71 / E74The washer detected a drum water temperature sensor fault or the wash temperature did not rise as expected.Needs a technician because the water temperature sensor and heater circuit are checked inside the washer.Usually a technician
E75The valve NTC temperature sensor failed or is not reporting correctly.Needs a technician because the valve temperature sensor circuit is internal.Usually a technician
EF5On some front-load models, the washer detected an incorrect water temperature.Unplug the washer, confirm hot and cold hoses are connected to the correct faucets, and restart with a normal load.Often a home check
EF5On some laundry-center models, the washer detected an unbalanced load.Pause the cycle, unplug the washer, and redistribute the load before restarting.Often a home check
EF6The control reset unexpectedly.Needs a technician if it returns after an unplug reset because the main control may be resetting or losing its stored state.Usually a technician
EF8A control key is stuck or being read as pressed.Unplug the washer and make sure no button is being held down by debris or a stuck control cover.Often a home check
E91 / E92The user interface and main control board are not communicating correctly.Needs a technician because the user interface and main control communication wiring is inside the console.Usually a technician
E93 / E94 / E97The console or main control has an incompatible machine or cycle configuration.Needs a technician because the console and main control configuration must be checked or programmed.Usually a technician
E95 / E9FThe control detected a memory or communication protocol problem.Needs a technician because the control memory and communication protocol must be diagnosed at the boards.Usually a technician

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Frigidaire washer error code?

Yes. Turn the washer off, unplug it for one minute, plug it back in, and restart the cycle. If the same code returns, the control is detecting the fault again.

Why does the code keep coming back after I clear it?

Stored history can clear while the active problem remains. Recheck safe external items such as hoses, load balance, level, and lid or door closure, then contact a technician for sensor, lock, motor, or control codes.

Why do some models show E1 while others show E11?

Top-load models often use short codes such as E1, E2, and E3. Front-load and laundry-center models often use E11, E21, and E41 for similar fill, drain, and door faults.

Is CL a fault code?

CL is usually a Control Lock status tied to the lid being open while Control Lock is active. Turn the washer off and deactivate Control Lock from the controls.
