Frigidaire washer not draining: what it means and what to check

You may see water left in the tub, wet clothes, or a Frigidaire washer that won’t drain or spin. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the water still won’t leave.

Straight answer

A Frigidaire washer not draining means the tub water isn’t being pumped out during the drain or spin part of the cycle. The most common cause is a small item, lint, or clothing stuck in the drain pump or drain path.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Cancel the cycle and unplug it

If the washer is full of water, stop the cycle before opening the lid or door. Unplug the washer if you’re going to touch the drain hose or clean a front access trap.

  2. Look behind the washer at the drain hose

Straighten any kinked, crushed, or sharply bent drain hose. If the washer moved during a spin cycle, the hose can get pinched against the wall.

  3. Check the standpipe setup

Check the standpipe height in your installation guide. Many top-load and laundry-center installs allow up to 96 inches, but some front-load models list a lower limit. The hose should not be sealed airtight with tape. The standpipe needs air and should be at least 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

  4. Try lowering the drain hose into a bucket

If you can reach the hose safely, place the end into a low bucket or floor drain to see if water siphons out. If no water comes out with the hose low, suspect a blockage in the pump, tub outlet, or hose.

  5. Check for a front pump cleanout if your model has one

Some front-load Frigidaire washers have a lower pump cleanout door. Unplug the washer, let hot water cool, set towels and a shallow pan down, then open the filter slowly and remove coins, hair, lint, or fabric pieces.

  6. Cut back on detergent if the tub is sudsy

Too much detergent can keep a washer from draining well. Don’t fill a dispenser past the max line, and use the detergent type listed for your model.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a washer12
  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pumpRemove the pump or open the cleanout, then inspect the inlet, outlet, and impeller for coins, lint, hair, socks, or a jammed impeller. If the pump is clear but noisy or won’t run while receiving power, replace the pump.
Tub outlet hose and drain hoseCheck the tub outlet where small socks often lodge, then check the pump inlet hose and outlet hose. A tech looks for a soft hose collapsed under clamp pressure, packed lint at the bend, or a crushed external drain hose.
Pump power feedWith the washer set to spin or drain, a technician checks the pump feed using the wiring diagram. If correct pump voltage is present and the clear pump doesn’t run, replace the pump. If voltage is missing, check the harness, lid or door interlock, pressure input, and timer or control output.
Timer or electronic control boardOn timer models, inspect for burned contacts or a timer that never sends power to the pump in drain. On electronic models, check the board for burn marks and confirm whether it sends voltage to the pump during the drain command.
Lid switch or door lockA failed lid switch can make a washer fill, then sit without moving into spin or drain. A technician tests the switch for continuity when closed, or checks the door lock signal on front-load models.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a Frigidaire washer that won’t drain?

A reset can help after a power surge or outage. Unplug the washer for a few minutes, then try a drain or spin cycle; if the tub still holds water, look for a clog or failed pump.

Why won’t my Frigidaire washer drain or spin?

Many Frigidaire washers won’t spin until the water level drops. A clogged pump, kinked hose, bad pump, or failed lid switch can leave the tub full and stop the spin portion.

Is a Frigidaire Affinity washer different?

Affinity front-load models often have a pump trap or lower service area, depending on the exact model. The same drain checks apply: hose, trap, pump, then door lock or control.

What if my Frigidaire washer dryer combo won’t drain?

A stacked combo can still have the same pump and hose problems, but access may be tighter. If the dryer section is already broken too, ask the repair company to check the whole unit before approving major parts.

Can I leave water sitting in the washer?

Don’t leave it for long. Scoop out what you can, or lower the drain hose into a bucket if it’s safe to reach, because standing wash water can smell and can leak if the tub is bumped.
