GE oven code F97: what it means and what to check
A GE double wall oven may show F97 as soon as preheat starts, or a few seconds after you press Start. On these ovens, the code points to the lower cooling fan speed circuit, so this page starts with the few safe checks you can do at the oven, then shows what a technician will test.

GE oven code F97 means the lower oven cooling fan is not reaching the speed the control expects. The most common cause is a lower cooling fan assembly that has slowed, stalled, or lost its speed signal.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Reset power once
Turn the oven off at the breaker for one minute, then turn it back on. If F97 comes back as soon as you start Bake or Preheat, the reset did its job and the oven still sees a fan speed fault.
- Let the oven cool fully
If the code appeared during a long bake or after heavy use, let the oven cool with the controls off. A hot cabinet can keep the cooling fan running for a while, but F97 returning on the next start points back to the fan speed circuit.
- Check the front vent area
Look at the vent trim and the area above or below the door, depending on your model. Foil, a pan, built-up grease, or a blocked grille can hurt airflow, though a true F97 on GE double ovens is usually more than a simple blocked vent.
- Note which oven you started
On GE double wall ovens, F96 is tied to the upper cooling fan and F97 is tied to the lower cooling fan. If F97 appears even when you start the upper oven, tell the repair company that detail because the shared control may still be reading the lower fan circuit.
- Stop repeated test starts
Don’t keep clearing the code and trying to cook. The cooling fan protects the controls and cabinet area, so the oven is doing the right thing by stopping the heat cycle.
Conditions that make this more likely
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Can I reset a GE oven code F97?
You can reset power at the breaker once. If the code returns during preheat, the control is still seeing a lower cooling fan speed problem, so a reset won’t be the fix.
Is F97 the oven temperature sensor?
On these GE double wall ovens, F97 is a cooling fan speed fault for the lower oven. A cavity temperature sensor is a different fault path.
Can I use the upper oven if the lower oven has F97?
I wouldn’t rely on it until the oven is checked. Some double ovens may stop either cavity when the control sees a cooling fan fault, because the blower protects the controls and cabinet space.
What is the difference between F96 and F97 on a GE double oven?
F96 points to the upper oven cooling fan speed circuit. F97 points to the lower oven cooling fan speed circuit.
Is GE oven code F97 a do-it-yourself repair?
For most homeowners, no. The oven is heavy, often wired on a high-power circuit, and the lower fan is reached from the back after the unit is pulled from the cabinet.
