GE gas oven not working: what to check when the burners still light

A GE gas range can have working surface burners while the oven stays cold, heats slowly, or never lights. This page walks through the safe checks first, then explains what a technician tests when the oven still won't bake or broil.

Straight answer

A GE gas oven not working usually means the bake burner isn't lighting, even if the surface burners still work. The most common repair cause is a weak or failed oven igniter that can't light the gas or open the safety valve properly.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Set bake again and press Start

On models with electronic controls, choose Bake, set a temperature, then press Start. On knob models, make sure the oven function knob and temperature knob are both in the right positions, especially if the knobs were removed for cleaning.

  2. Reset the oven control

Turn the range breaker off, wait one minute, then turn it back on. Try this even if the clock or oven light works, because the electronic oven control can lock up while the display still has power.

  3. Check Sabbath mode and control lock features

Some GE ranges won't respond the way you expect if Sabbath mode is on. Look in the Special Features section of the owner's manual for your exact model, since the button sequence changes by control style.

  4. Check the self-clean latch

If your range has a manual self-clean latch, make sure it's fully in the unlocked position. On many GE ranges with a latch, unlocked is all the way to the left.

  5. Compare the oven with the surface burners

If the surface burners light normally but the oven doesn't heat, the house gas supply is usually present and the fault is likely inside the oven ignition system. If the burners and oven both have no gas, stop using the range and have the gas supply checked.

  6. Leave it off if you smell gas

A small odor right at ignition can happen on some older gas ovens, but it should clear quickly. If the odor lingers, turn the oven off, open windows, shut off the gas supply if you can do so safely, then call your gas supplier from outside the home.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Bake igniterSet the oven to Bake and watch the igniter area from a safe viewing point after panels are removed by the technician. A weak igniter may glow but fail to light the burner, or may take longer than 90 seconds before ignition, which points to an igniter that can't draw enough current to open the safety valve.
Bake burner and flame spreaderInspect the burner ports for rust flakes, food spillover, or a warped flame spreader above the igniter. A delayed whoosh, uneven flame, or flame lifting away from the burner can look like an igniter problem until the burner is cleaned or replaced.
Gas safety valveWith a known good igniter calling for heat, the technician checks whether the valve opens and feeds the bake burner. If the igniter is strong and powered but no gas reaches the burner, the safety valve becomes the suspect.
Oven control or relay boardIf the igniter never glows, the technician checks for power being sent from the oven control during a bake call and looks for burned relay points or heat-damaged board traces. No output from the control with proper input power points back to the control, not the igniter.
Temperature sensorIf the oven lights but quits early, overshoots, or won't hold temperature, the sensor circuit is checked from the control area and at the sensor plug. A sensor fault is more likely when the oven does heat, but the temperature behavior is wrong.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a GE gas oven that isn't working?

Yes. Turn the breaker off for one minute, then turn it back on. If the oven still doesn't bake, the reset didn't clear the root fault.

Why does my GE oven not work but the stove does?

The surface burners use a different ignition path than the oven. When the burners light but the oven stays cold, the bake igniter is the first part a technician checks.

Is it safe to keep trying if the oven smells like gas?

No. Turn the oven off, ventilate the room, shut off the gas supply if it's safe, then call the gas supplier from outside. A lingering gas odor is treated as a gas safety issue before appliance repair.

Can self-clean make a GE oven stop working?

Yes, heat from a self-clean cycle can stress oven parts. After self-clean, check that the latch is unlocked, then try a breaker reset before calling a repair company.

Does a weak igniter always stop glowing?

No. A common miss is assuming a glowing igniter is good. It can glow orange and still be too weak to open the gas valve fast enough.
