GE washer error codes: what each one means

This table covers confirmed GE washer display messages and stored fault codes for common top-load, compact front-load, full-size front-load, and older front-load models sold for household use. Because the same number can mean different things by model, match the code format and model family, try only the safe first check, and contact a technician when the code points to a failed part or live-circuit testing.

Reading the code

GE washers may show codes as scrolling words, letters, numbered fault codes, or blinking status lights, depending on the model. Wait out any 4 minute lockout, unplug the washer for 2 minutes only after the display is responsive, and unplug before checking hoses, loads, the dispenser, or any owner manual pump filter steps. bALAnCINg, dELAY, End, FILL, SEnSIng, PAUSE, and Spin Stop are status messages rather than faults.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a washer12
  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

GE washer error codes

Messages vary by model; electronic top-load models from 2015 and newer, CHI models from 2017 and newer, current GFW front-load platforms, compact GFW148 models, and older WBVH or WCVH front-load models use different code formats.

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a GE washer error code?

Unplug the washer for 2 minutes, then plug it back in and restart the cycle after any lockout period ends. If the code returns, the washer is still detecting the fault.

Why does the same code keep coming back?

The control is still seeing the same condition, such as slow fill, slow drain, an unbalanced load, a lock problem, or a sensor fault. Stop using the washer if water will not shut off, the lid or door will not unlock, or the washer smells hot, and contact a technician.

Are older E codes the same as newer number codes?

No. Older front-load models use E codes such as E22 and E31, while newer electronic models may store numbered fault codes in Consumer Error Mode.

Is bALAnCINg an error code?

No. bALAnCINg means the washer is trying to redistribute the load, and it is a status message rather than a failure.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
