Hotpoint dryer not heating: what it means and what to check

Your Hotpoint dryer may tumble normally while the clothes stay cold or come out damp after a full cycle. This page helps you sort the safe checks from the repairs that need a meter, cabinet tear-down, or gas diagnosis.

Straight answer

A Hotpoint dryer not heating means the heat circuit is open, the dryer lacks proper power or gas, or airflow has overheated a safety part. On electric Hotpoint dryers, a common repair is a failed heating element, burned heater lead, or another heater circuit part.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Make sure it isn't set to no heat

Turn the cycle knob away from Air Fluff or no-heat settings, then try a timed heat cycle. Simple setting errors happen, especially on basic knob models with faded labels.

  2. Reset the breaker the right way

For an electric dryer, flip the dryer breaker fully off, then back on. A dryer motor can run on one side of the supply while the heater still has no usable 240 volt heat power.

  3. Check the lint screen with water

Pull the lint screen and remove lint, then rinse warm water through the mesh. Dryer-sheet film can look clear while it blocks airflow, so water should pass through the screen instead of pooling.

  4. Look at the outside vent

Run the dryer for a minute and check for strong airflow at the outside hood. Weak flow, a stuck vent flap, or packed lint can cause long dry times and can open a heat safety part.

  5. For gas models, check the gas shutoff

Make sure the gas valve feeding the dryer is open and that other gas appliances are working, but only if there is no gas odor. If you smell gas, leave the area and call the gas utility or fire department from outside the home.

  6. Try a short power reset

Unplug the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes, then plug it back in. This may clear a control glitch, but it won't repair an open heater, thermostat, igniter, or broken wire.

Air leaves through the lint screen, the transition hose and the wall duct to the outside flap. A crushed hose or packed duct causes most heat and long-dry problems.

On a gas dryer, the shutoff valve on the pipe behind it is open when the handle lines up with the pipe. The burner, igniter and flame sensor sit behind a lower panel and are a technician's job. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Power cord and terminal blockInspect the rear terminal block for burned lugs, melted plastic, or loose cord connections. With live voltage testing, a technician should see about 120 volts from center to each outer post and 208 to 240 volts across the two outer posts on an electric model.
Heating element and heater leadAfter removing the front and drum, the element sits in a horseshoe-shaped pan behind the drum. A technician checks for a broken coil, burned terminal, damaged heater wire, or no continuity through the heater circuit.
Thermal fuse, thermal limiters, and high-limit thermostatThese parts are tested for continuity with power removed. An open safety part stops heat, and the vent path should be checked before the part is replaced so the new one doesn't fail from poor airflow.
Timer heat contactsThe tech sheet in the console shows the correct timer terminals, often A and B on these GE-style Hotpoint timers. In a heat cycle, the meter should show continuity or about 0.00 ohms; if it never closes, the timer or a stripped timer shaft is suspect.
Gas igniterOn a Hotpoint gas dryer, the technician watches the burner start sequence and checks whether the igniter glows. A cracked igniter, no glow, or weak ignition points to an igniter or related gas heat circuit fault.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Does a Hotpoint dryer have a reset button for no heat?

Some dryers have reset procedures, but many basic Hotpoint knob models don't have a heat reset button that fixes this fault. Reset the breaker or unplug the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes; if it still won't heat, a part in the heat circuit needs testing.

Why does my Hotpoint electric dryer run but stay cold?

The motor can run even when the heater isn't getting proper 240 volt power. If the breaker and outlet test correctly, the usual suspects are the heater element, heater wiring, thermostats, or timer contacts.

Where is the thermal fuse on a Hotpoint dryer?

A small fuse near the rear terminal area may stop the dryer from running at all, so it isn't always the cause of a no-heat complaint. The heat thermostats and limiters on many GE-built Hotpoint dryers are reached from the front after the top, front panel, drum, and belt are removed.

Can a clogged vent make a Hotpoint dryer stop heating?

Yes. Poor airflow can overheat the dryer and open a thermal fuse or limit thermostat. Unplug the dryer before cleaning the lint screen, vent hose, and outside hood, then check airflow before replacing heat parts.

What should I check on a Hotpoint gas dryer not heating?

Start with the gas shutoff valve and make sure the dryer is set to a heat cycle. If the drum runs and there is still no heat, a technician should test the igniter and gas heat circuit rather than guessing at parts.
