Hotpoint dryer not starting: what to check first
A Hotpoint dryer that won't start may be totally silent, may hum for a second, or may run only while you hold the start button. This guide shows the safe checks to make at the console and door before a technician tests the start circuit inside the dryer.

A Hotpoint dryer that won't start often has an open motor start circuit, a timer still in an off position, or, on an electric model, a missing 208/240-volt supply. One very common simple cause on GE-built Hotpoint dryers is a cracked or stripped timer knob that turns in your hand without moving the timer shaft.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Check the timer knob
Pull the main timer knob straight off and look at the plastic insert on the back. If it's split, rounded out, or full of white plastic dust, the knob may be slipping while the timer stays off. This is the classic miss on these machines.
- Listen as you turn the timer
Turn the timer clockwise to a timed dry cycle. You should feel firm clicks from the timer shaft, not a smooth dead turn. If the knob feels loose, test again with the knob removed by gently turning the metal shaft with your fingers.
- Press the start button squarely
Make sure the plastic start button isn't cracked or sitting crooked in the console. On some Hotpoint dryers, the plastic cap fails before the switch behind it fails, so pressing the center firmly can tell you if the cap is the issue.
- Close the door hard once
Open the door, check for clothing caught near the latch, then close it with a firm push. If the door switch doesn't click, the dryer may act dead because it thinks the door is open.
- Reset the dryer breaker
Turn the dryer breaker all the way off, then back on. A double dryer breaker can look on while partly tripped, and an electric dryer needs both legs of power, so a breaker reset is worth trying before calling anyone.
- Feel the drum with the dryer unplugged
Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand. A locked-up drum points to an obstruction, while a drum that spins with almost no drag can point to a broken belt.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Inside the door opening, on the frame
- Some models: on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
Check both breakers
Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.
Common questions about appliance repair
Can I reset a Hotpoint dryer that won't start?
You can reset the breaker by turning it fully off, then back on. If the dryer still does nothing, the fault is usually a failed part, a bad cord connection, or missing voltage at the outlet.
Why does my Hotpoint dryer have power but won't start?
Power at the house outlet doesn't prove the start circuit is complete. The timer contacts, push-to-start switch, door switch, any thermal cutout or belt switch used on that model, and the motor all have to pass power for the motor to run.
Is a cracked timer knob really enough to stop the dryer?
Yes. If the back of the knob is stripped, the knob can turn while the timer shaft stays in an off spot. Pulling the knob off is one of the quickest checks.
What if the dryer is still under warranty?
If the dryer is within the manufacturer warranty period, contact the seller or manufacturer before paying a repair company. A newer dryer with no sound at all may need a timer, thermal cutout, switch or power check.
Are Hotpoint dryer no-start checks different from GE dryer checks?
GE Appliances-backed Hotpoint dryers use very similar checks, so the testing path is close to a GE dryer. The exact part numbers still depend on the model tag inside the door area.
