Kenmore dishwasher not draining: what to check first
You open the Kenmore dishwasher and find dirty water sitting in the bottom of the tub. It may smell bad, leave grit on dishes, or ignore the cancel drain command. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when it still won't drain.

A Kenmore dishwasher that won't drain usually means water is being blocked before it reaches the household drain, or the drain pump isn't moving it out. A common first cause is food, grease, or debris clogging the filter and sump area.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Run cancel drain and let it finish
Start a cycle, then press and hold cancel or start for the drain cancel function if your model uses that control. Let it run its full drain period, often about 2 minutes, before opening the door. If the cycle was interrupted or the restriction is light, this may move enough water to let you clean the filter safely.
- Remove standing water before pulling the filter
Use a cup, sponge, towels, or a wet vac to get the dirty water out of the tub. If there is loose food or broken glass in the water, wear gloves and lift it out with tongs or a scoop so it doesn't drop into the pump when the filter comes out.
- Clean the filter and the sump well
Pull the lower rack. Many Whirlpool-built Kenmore models use a round filter that turns counterclockwise, while older styles may have flat mesh screens under the lower spray arm. Wash greasy mesh with hot water and a toothbrush, then look down in the sump for pasta, labels, seeds, broken glass, or the black gunk techs see all the time.
- Check the garbage disposal connection
Run the disposal with water at the sink. If the disposal was recently replaced, unplug it or turn off its breaker before anyone checks the dishwasher inlet; the plastic knockout plug must be removed for the dishwasher to drain into it. On older installs, the short disposal nipple can pack solid with grease.
- Look for a kinked drain hose or missing high loop
Under the sink, follow the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal, branch tailpiece, or air gap. It should rise to the air gap or high under the counter before dropping to the drain, and it should not be pinched in the visible cabinet area. A bad hose path can let sink water run back into the tub after the dishwasher stops.
- Check for suds from regular dish soap
If the water is foamy, someone may have used hand dish soap or a pan with soap residue. Suds can interfere with normal pumping and can cause leaks or poor washing. Let the suds settle, remove as much water as you can, then run a rinse drain cycle with no detergent.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
- Some models: on the top edge of the door
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Will resetting a Kenmore dishwasher fix a drain problem?
A reset or cancel drain can help if the control was stuck mid-cycle or the pump needed one more drain command. If water still sits in the tub after the drain period, treat it like a clog or failed drain part.
Why did it stop draining after a new garbage disposal was installed?
The usual miss is the disposal knockout plug still sitting inside the dishwasher inlet. The dishwasher hose can be attached correctly and still have nowhere to send water if that plug wasn't removed.
Should I remove the filter while the tub is full of water?
Remove as much water and loose debris as you can first. Pulling the filter with dirty water still covering it can let food, glass, or seeds fall into the pump area.
How do I know if my Kenmore is Whirlpool-built or GE-built?
Open the door and read the model tag on the tub frame or door edge. The first three digits tell the builder family, such as 665 for many Whirlpool-built models and 363 for many GE-built models.
What if the drain pump makes no noise at all?
No pump sound can mean a dead pump, a jammed rotor, or no power being sent to the pump. After the clog checks, a technician will test the pump and then the control or timer output.
