Kenmore dishwasher not starting: what to check first

The panel may be dark, lit with Start doing nothing, or stuck with a flashing light. This guide sorts the quick checks from the parts a technician tests, including the Kenmore reset-code confusion.

Straight answer

A Kenmore dishwasher not starting means the control is blocked from beginning the cycle, either by a lock setting, an open-door signal, lost power to the board, or a failed start input. A common simple cause is Control Lock being on; when an electronic-control model is totally dark and house power is present, a blown thermal fuse near the control board is one part technicians check early.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check Control Lock first

Look for a red lock or padlock light, Lock On, or a display message your manual calls Control Lock. Don't assume every CL means lock; on some Kenmore displays, CL means close the door. Hold the lock-marked key for 3 to 5 seconds; it may be Heated Dry, Air Dry, No Heat Dry, China Gentle, Top Rack Only, or Control Lock.

  2. Reset power one time

Turn the dishwasher breaker off, or unplug it if accessible, for about 1 to 5 minutes, then restore power. If the panel wakes up, watch the next few loads because repeat lockups can point to a keypad or control issue.

  3. Make sure the door is actually latching

Open and close the door firmly. You should feel a solid click; a flashing Start light, no change in the LEDs after closing, or a loose feel at the latch points toward the latch, strike, or door switch circuit.

  4. Rule out Delay Start and odd Start timing

Make sure Delay Start isn't selected. On many top-control Kenmore panels, press Start or Start/Resume and close the door within 3 seconds; if the Start light flashes, press Start again and close it firmly.

  5. Look for standing water

Many dishwashers drain at the start of a new cycle. If water is sitting in the tub, clean the filter cup, check the air gap cap if you have one, and look at the disposal inlet if a disposal was recently installed.

  6. Try the keypad diagnostic sequence

Some Whirlpool-built 665 electronic Kenmore panels enter diagnostics by pressing three allowed keys in a quick 1-2-3 pattern three times. If the LEDs light and a self-test starts after you close the door, the control is responding; if it won't enter or run the test, use the model tech sheet and move the latch, UI, and control checks up the list.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
  2. Some models: on the top edge of the door
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Thermal fuseWith power disconnected, the technician accesses the control area and, on models that use a separate thermal fuse, checks continuity across its two terminals. A good fuse reads zero or nearly zero ohms; an open fuse can leave the control panel dark even when house power is present.
Door latch switchesThe door catch is used to press each latch switch while the meter is on Rx1 or continuity. A working switch reads zero or nearly zero ohms when actuated; broken plastic latch tongues or a switch that never closes will keep the control from starting the cycle.
Touchpad or front control panelIf the display works but Start or a few keys don't, the technician checks the ribbon connection for corrosion, reseats it, then tests the keypad matrix when the tech sheet allows it. On some electronic panels, unplugging the keypad from the control and closing the door will make the drain pump run for about two minutes when the touchpad is the bad part.
Drain pump and drain pathAt the start command, the technician checks whether the unit is trying to drain before washing. Standing water with humming or vibration and no water movement points to a blocked filter, clogged air gap or disposal inlet, jammed pump, or failed pump.
Electronic control or timerAfter the fuse, latch, keypad, and drain checks pass, the technician verifies supply into the board and output to the first load in the cycle using the wiring diagram. On older timer models, timer contacts are checked against the timer chart for open or closed positions; timer-motor resistance is model-specific.

Common questions about appliance repair

What is the Kenmore dishwasher reset code?

There isn't one reset code for every Kenmore dishwasher. Some Whirlpool-built 665 electronic panels enter service diagnostics by pressing three allowed keys in a 1-2-3 pattern three times; all LEDs may light, then a self-test can run when the door closes.

Why does my Kenmore Elite dishwasher have lights but won't start?

Kenmore Elite panels often hide the buttons when the door shuts, so it's easy to miss Lock, Delay Start, or a failed Start key. If other keys work and Start doesn't, the keypad or ribbon connection moves up the list.

Why is my Kenmore dishwasher not turning on at all?

First check the breaker. If house power is present and the panel is dark, a technician usually tests the thermal fuse near the control before condemning the board.

Can a clogged drain stop it from starting?

It can make it seem stuck at the start. Many dishwashers begin a cycle by draining old water; standing water, a clogged filter area, air gap, or disposal inlet can hold it in the drain portion instead of moving into wash.

Is it worth fixing an older Kenmore dishwasher?

If the issue is a fuse, latch switch, or keypad connection, it can be a reasonable repair. If it needs a control panel plus a motor on an older machine, a repair company may suggest replacing the dishwasher.
