Dryer not heating Kenmore: why it runs with no heat

Your Kenmore dryer tumbles, the timer moves, and the clothes still come out damp. This guide shows the safe checks to make first, then what a technician tests when the heat circuit or gas burner has failed.

Straight answer

A Kenmore dryer not heating means the drum can turn while the heat circuit on an electric model or the burner system on a gas model isn't making usable heat. The most common thing to check first is lint-restricted airflow in the filter, duct, or outside hood, because it can trip the thermal cutoff and leave the dryer running with no heat.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the cycle setting

Make sure the dryer isn't set to Air Fluff, No Heat, or a wrinkle cycle that uses little heat. Pick Timed Dry with heat for one test load.

  2. Reset the double breaker

On an electric Kenmore dryer, the motor can run on partial power while the heater gets no 240-volt supply. Flip the paired dryer breaker fully off, then back on once. If it trips again, stop there.

  3. Clean the lint screen and the screen slot

Pull the lint screen and wash off any softener film if water beads on it. Use a vacuum hose at the lint screen slot if you can reach it without taking the dryer apart.

  4. Check the vent path

Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked vent hose. Then check the outside hood for a stuck flap or a packed lint mat. Weak airflow here is a common reason the thermal cutoff opens.

  5. For a gas dryer, check the gas valve

If the gas shutoff is easy to see, its handle should line up with the pipe. If you smell gas, don't touch switches or use a phone inside. Leave the area, then call the gas provider or emergency service from outside.

Air leaves through the lint screen, the transition hose and the wall duct to the outside flap. A crushed hose or packed duct causes most heat and long-dry problems.

On a gas dryer, the shutoff valve on the pipe behind it is open when the handle lines up with the pipe. The burner, igniter and flame sensor sit behind a lower panel and are a technician's job. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Inside the door opening, on the frame
  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Thermal cutoff and high-limit thermostatWith power disconnected, the technician removes at least one wire and checks each safety thermostat for continuity at room temperature. An open cutoff on the heater housing points to an overheat event, so the vent and heater area have to be checked and the cutoff/high-limit kit replaced where the parts list calls for it.
Heating elementOn many Whirlpool-built Kenmore electric dryers, the heater is checked across its two terminals after one wire is removed. A good element is commonly about 10 to 12 ohms, depending on wattage; an open circuit means the coil is broken.
Incoming powerFor an electric dryer, the technician checks for 240 volts from L1 to L2 at the outlet or terminal block. If only part of the supply is present, the dryer may tumble with no heat.
Operating thermostat and timer heat contactsThe operating thermostat on the blower housing is checked for continuity across its main heat terminals, with one wire removed. The timer heat contacts are checked against the model wiring diagram when the timer is set to a heated cycle.
Motor centrifugal switchOn many Whirlpool-style Kenmore electric dryers, one heater leg passes through the motor centrifugal switch after the motor comes up to speed. A technician checks the heater switch contacts by the tech sheet or wiring diagram with power disconnected; an open contact means the switch isn't passing heat power.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can a Kenmore electric dryer run with no heat because of the breaker?

Yes. The motor can run even when the heater doesn't get the full 240-volt supply. Reset the paired breaker once, then have the outlet or terminal block tested if heat doesn't return.

Will unplugging the dryer reset the heat?

Unplugging can clear a control glitch on some models, but it won't fix an open thermal cutoff, broken heater coil, or bad thermostat. Those parts have to be tested.

Is a clogged vent enough to make the dryer stop heating?

Yes. Restricted airflow can overheat the heater housing and open the thermal cutoff. Clean the vent path before replacing heat parts.

Is the repair different for a gas Kenmore dryer?

Yes. A gas dryer doesn't use an electric heating element. A technician checks the igniter, gas valve coils, flame sensor, gas supply, and the same airflow safety parts.

Where do I find the Kenmore model number?

Open the dryer door and look around the door frame or cabinet opening. Use the full model number because Kenmore dryers were built by more than one manufacturer.
