Kenmore dryer not starting: what it means and what to check

Your Kenmore dryer may be dead, may click once, or may hum when you press Start without turning the drum. This page helps you sort the quick checks from the parts a technician needs to test. Kenmore is a label, so the model prefix matters.

Straight answer

A Kenmore dryer not starting usually means the dryer isn’t getting the motor circuit completed, or the motor can’t get moving. On many Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers, a common cause is an open thermal fuse, often after poor airflow overheats the blower housing.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Confirm the dryer has power

Make sure the plug is seated. On an electric dryer, reset the double breaker by turning it fully off, then back on, because one side of a 240 volt supply can drop out while lights or the timer still seem normal.

  2. Listen to the door switch

Open and close the door slowly. Most Kenmore dryers make a small click at the door switch, and a missing click points toward a door switch problem.

  3. Check for a blocked vent clue

Think back to the last few loads. Long dry times, steamy clothes, or a hot laundry room point to poor airflow, which is the usual reason the thermal fuse opens.

  4. Clean the easy lint spots

Clean the lint screen, then look into the lint screen slot with a flashlight. If you can reach lint with a vacuum crevice tool from the outside of the slot, remove what you can without taking panels off.

  5. Note whether it hums

If the dryer hums when you press Start but the drum doesn't turn, stop trying to start it over and over. That symptom often points to a weak motor, a start part on models that use one, or a drum that is hard to turn.

  6. Try the drum by hand with power off

Unplug the dryer, open the door, and turn the drum by hand. It should turn with some belt resistance, so a drum that feels stuck or rough can point to an idler pulley, roller, bearing, or something caught in the blower.

Air leaves through the lint screen, the transition hose and the wall duct to the outside flap. A crushed hose or packed duct causes most heat and long-dry problems.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dryer12
  1. Inside the door opening, on the frame
  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Thermal fuseUnplug the dryer, isolate one wire from the fuse, then check continuity across the two fuse terminals. No continuity means the fuse is open; on many Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers it sits on the blower housing as a small white part with two light-blue wires and one 1/4 inch screw.
Door switchCheck the switch for a firm click, then test the proper switch terminals for continuity with the door closed position held in. A switch that clicks can still fail electrically, so the meter test matters.
Push-to-start switchWith the dryer unplugged, a technician checks continuity through the start switch only while the button is pressed. If the circuit stays open while pressed, the motor never gets its start signal.
Drive motor and drum loadIf the motor hums, the belt is removed so the technician can see whether the drum, idler pulley, rollers, blower wheel, or motor shaft is binding. A motor that only starts with a hand assist, or keeps humming with the belt off, points to a failed motor or start part on models that use one.
Timer or electronic controlAfter the fuse, door switch, start switch, and motor path test good, the technician checks whether the timer or control is sending power through the motor circuit in a valid cycle. Burn marks, loose terminals, or no output in the start circuit point to a control-side fault.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Kenmore dryer thermal fuse?

No. A thermal fuse is a one-time safety part. If it is open, it has to be replaced, and the vent path should be cleaned before the dryer is run again.

Why did the new thermal fuse fail again?

The usual reason is still-restricted airflow. Lint in the wall duct, a crushed transition hose, a stuck outside flap, or lint packed in the blower area can overheat the dryer again.

Does a clicking door switch mean the switch is good?

It’s a good clue, but it doesn’t prove the electrical contacts are closing. A technician confirms it with a continuity test at the switch terminals.

What does it mean if my Kenmore dryer hums but won't start?

A hum usually means power is reaching the motor circuit, but the motor cannot start under load. The usual checks are a stuck drum system, idler pulley drag, blower wheel obstruction, weak motor, or a start part on models that use one.

Are Kenmore Elite dryers different?

Kenmore Elite is a trim line, not a single maker. The model prefix tells who built it, and that controls the part layout and test sheet.
