Maytag oven not heating: what to check first

Your Maytag oven may turn on, count down preheat, or show a normal display while the cavity stays cold. This guide helps you sort simple checks from parts that need a technician, with notes for gas and electric models.

Straight answer

A Maytag oven not heating means the bake system is not being powered, not igniting gas, or not getting a usable temperature signal. On a gas model, a worn igniter is a common report; on an electric model, the first parts to check are the bake and broil elements.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check power at the breaker

Turn the range or wall oven off at the breaker, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. If an electric oven display works but the elements stay cold, one side of the power supply may still be missing, so stop there and call a technician or electrician.

  2. Confirm the oven mode and temperature setting

Make sure Bake is selected, the temperature is set in Fahrenheit if that is what you expect, and any delay start or timer setting is cleared. A wrong setting or miscalibration can make the oven seem weak rather than fully dead.

  3. Look at the gas shutoff setup

If the surface burners work but the gas oven won't heat, don't pull the range or move a gas valve to check it. A technician can check the regulator shutoff; on some Maytag gas ranges it can feed the cooktop while blocking gas to the oven, often after delivery or service.

  4. Watch the igniter on a gas oven

Start Bake and watch from the oven window or oven opening without reaching inside. A glow with no flame, a weak glow, no glow on a glow-bar model, or no clicking/spark on a spark model points to the igniter circuit and usually needs a part test.

  5. Inspect visible electric elements

With the oven off and fully cool, look for a blistered, cracked, burned, or broken bake or broil element. If an element does not glow red during a heat cycle, the element or its supply circuit needs a technician test.

  6. Check the door and sensor position

Make sure the door closes fully and the gasket is not torn or folded. Look at the thin temperature sensor tube near the back wall of the oven; it should sit straight out from the wall, close to a 90 degree angle.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Gas oven igniterThe technician starts Bake and watches the ignition system. A glow with no burner ignition, no glow on a glow-bar model, no spark on a spark model, or a failed current or continuity test points to the igniter circuit before the gas valve in many calls.
Bake or broil elementThe element is inspected for cracks, blisters, burn spots, or a break in the coil. With power off, the technician checks continuity through the element; an open element fails the test.
Oven temperature sensorThe sensor is checked for position first because being bumped away from the proper angle can throw off oven temperature. If position is right, the technician tests the sensor and wiring resistance against the model tech sheet.
Thermal fuse or high-limit switchThe safety cutoff is tested with the oven disconnected from power. No continuity means the cutoff has opened and can stop the oven from heating.
Electronic oven control or relay boardThe technician checks for stored error codes, a display that accepts commands but never powers heat, burned board parts, scorched wiring, or a burned plastic smell. If the load parts test good but the board never sends power, the board or relay assembly is the suspect.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Maytag oven that won't heat?

Yes. Turn the oven off at the breaker for a few minutes, then restore power. If the oven still won't heat, the reset did its job as a test and the fault is likely a part, power supply issue, or gas supply issue.

Why does my Maytag gas stove work but the oven does not?

The cooktop burners and oven do not always fail together. A regulator shutoff can allow gas to the surface burners while keeping gas from the oven, and a weak oven igniter can glow without lighting the bake burner.

Why does my Maytag electric oven turn on but stay cold?

An electric oven can have a working display while the bake circuit has failed. Common checks are the breaker, bake element, broil element, thermal fuse, high-limit switch, and control relay.

Is a dirty igniter enough to stop a gas oven from heating?

Buildup can affect ignition, so gentle cleaning may help if your manual allows it. If the igniter glows but the burner will not light, it is often worn and needs a technician test.

Is this different for a wall oven versus a range?

The basic fault path is similar: power, heat source, sensor, safety cutoff, then control. A range adds cooktop clues, while a wall oven often points more directly to the power supply, element, sensor, fuse, or control board.
