Speed Queen dryer not drying: what it means and what to check

Your Speed Queen dryer may run the full cycle, yet the clothes come out damp or cold. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the dryer still won't dry.

Straight answer

A Speed Queen dryer not drying usually means the dryer is tumbling, but heat or airflow is missing. A common cause is restricted airflow from a lint-packed vent, kinked duct, blocked weather hood, or lint filter film.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the cycle and load

Make sure the dryer isn't set to NO HEAT, COOL DOWN, or COOL TUMBLE. On automatic cycles, try MORE DRY, and separate bulky items from light clothes so heavy pieces don't stay damp after the rest of the load is dry.

  2. Clean the lint screen with soap and water

Pull the lint screen and remove lint, then wash the screen with warm water and dish soap. Fabric softener film can clog the mesh even when the screen looks clean.

  3. Look at the outside vent while the dryer runs

Start a heated cycle, then check the outside hood. The flap should open with a strong air push; weak movement points to a clogged, crushed, or kinked exhaust run. Airflow cleaning is the first fix on many long-dry calls.

  4. Reset the dryer breaker on electric models

An electric dryer can tumble with no heat if one side of its two-pole supply is tripped. Push the dryer breaker fully off, then back on. If it trips again, stop and have the circuit checked.

  5. Check gas supply on gas models

If your dryer is gas, don't move the dryer or work on gas parts. If you smell gas, don't touch switches or try to run the dryer; leave the area and call the gas supplier or fire department. If the igniter glows but the flame doesn't stay lit, call a technician.

Air leaves through the lint screen, the transition hose and the wall duct to the outside flap. A crushed hose or packed duct causes most heat and long-dry problems.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Inside the door opening, on the frame
  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust duct and weather hoodThe tech checks the full air path from lint screen to outside hood, looking for a crushed duct, packed lint, a bird nest, or a hood flap that barely opens. If airflow has to be isolated, the tech measures back pressure or does only a brief, controlled test with exhaust routed safely; better heat or stronger airflow points back to the house vent.
Thermal fuseWith the dryer unplugged, the fuse is checked for continuity at its two terminals. No continuity or an infinite reading means it has opened. A blown fuse is a symptom, so the vent path gets checked before the dryer is put back in service.
Heating elementOn electric models, the element coil is inspected for a break, sagging coil, burnt spot, or a coil touching the housing. A good element should match the resistance spec on the model's tech sheet; OL or infinite means the element is open, and any continuity from the coil to the housing means it's shorted.
Cycling thermostat and high limit thermostatThese thermostats are tested for continuity at room temperature. The cycling thermostat should open when heated during a bench test, then close again as it cools; no continuity cold points to a failed thermostat.
Gas valve solenoid coilsOn gas models, the tell is an igniter that glows bright, then no flame lights, or the flame starts briefly and drops out. The coils are replaced as a set when the burner pattern shows the valve isn't opening or holding properly.
Fabric selector switch and timerThe selector switch is checked against the wiring diagram for the selected heat setting, with the proper L1-to-heat contacts closed and the NO HEAT position not feeding the heat circuit. The timer is checked for burnt or discolored heat terminals and loss of continuity through the heat contacts when the dryer should be calling for heat.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Does a Speed Queen dryer have a reset button?

Some heat safety parts are inside the dryer, but they aren't a normal owner reset. Start with the breaker, lint screen, vent hood, and settings. If an internal safety has opened, a technician needs to find the cause.

Why does my electric Speed Queen dryer run but not heat?

An electric dryer can run on part of its power supply while the heater gets no full line-to-line power. Reset the breaker first. If that doesn't help, the likely checks are the thermal fuse, heating element, thermostats, timer, and heat wiring.

What if the dryer has a little heat but still doesn't dry well?

Weak heat with damp loads often points to poor airflow, not a bad heater. Check for a kinked duct, long packed vent run, blocked outside hood, or a lint screen coated with softener film.

Is the diagnosis different for gas and electric Speed Queen dryers?

Yes. Electric models use a heating element and 240 volt supply, while gas models use an igniter, burner, and gas valve coils. The airflow checks are the same on both.

Should I keep running it if clothes take several cycles?

Don't keep forcing long cycles if the dryer is getting very hot, smells scorched, or suddenly lost heat. A blocked vent can overheat the dryer and trip or open a heat safety.
