Speed Queen dryer not heating: what it means and what to check

Your Speed Queen dryer may still tumble, yet the clothes come out damp or cool after a full cycle. This page shows the safe checks to make first, then the parts a technician tests on electric and gas models.

Straight answer

A Speed Queen dryer not heating means the drum is turning, but the heat circuit or burner system isn't being powered or isn't able to make heat. A common cause is restricted airflow that can open the thermal fuse or make the high limit thermostat cycle.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the dryer breaker fully

An electric Speed Queen can run the motor on one side of a 240 volt circuit and still have no heat if the other side is tripped. Push the dryer breaker fully to OFF, then back ON, and test a timed dry heat cycle.

  2. Check the cycle and heat setting

Set the dryer to Time Dry and choose Normal Heat. Air Fluff, No Heat, or a fabric setting with a failed selector contact can leave the dryer tumbling with no heat.

  3. Wash the lint screen

Pull the lint screen and wash it with warm soapy water, then let it dry before reinstalling it. Fabric softener film can block the mesh even when it looks clean.

  4. Check the outside vent flap

Run the dryer and look at the outside vent. The flap should move strongly; weak airflow points to a clogged vent, crushed duct, or lint packed near the outlet.

  5. Look behind the dryer for a crushed vent

If you can see the duct without moving the dryer hard, check for a crushed flex hose or a sharp bend. On a gas dryer, don't strain the gas line to reach it.

  6. Stop if you smell gas

For a Speed Queen gas dryer, shut the dryer off if it keeps trying to ignite but won't heat. If you smell gas, don't touch switches or use a phone nearby. Clear the area and call the gas supplier or fire department. Gas valve, igniter, and burner work belongs to a qualified technician.

Air leaves through the lint screen, the transition hose and the wall duct to the outside flap. A crushed hose or packed duct causes most heat and long-dry problems.

On a gas dryer, the shutoff valve on the pipe behind it is open when the handle lines up with the pipe. The burner, igniter and flame sensor sit behind a lower panel and are a technician's job. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Thermal fuseOn the electric layout shown in service walkthroughs, the thermal fuse is on the right side of the heating element housing. With power disconnected, a technician removes one wire and checks continuity. An open fuse is bad; Speed Queen service data says to replace the thermal fuse and matching limit thermostat, then check the vent system before the dryer is run again.
Heating elementWith one element wire removed, the element is checked for resistance across its terminals and compared with the tech sheet for that model. Speed Queen data uses different cold ohm specs by element and voltage; an open element, a short to the housing, or a reading outside that model's spec means the element or heater assembly is replaced.
High limit thermostat and cycling thermostatThe high limit thermostat is checked on the heating element housing, while the cycling thermostat is checked at the front bulkhead area after access is opened. At room temperature, each should show continuity; an open thermostat stops heat.
Incoming power at terminal blockA technician checks live AC voltage from the red wire to the black wire at the dryer terminal block. The expected supply for an electric Speed Queen heat circuit is the voltage on the model tag, commonly 240 volts AC and sometimes 208 volts AC on rated models; low or missing voltage points to the breaker, cord, outlet, or house wiring rather than the dryer heat parts.
Timer, fabric selector, and motor centrifugal switchIn Time Dry, the timer heat contact is checked from L2 to H for continuity on models that use that timer. The fabric selector is checked in a heat setting at the terminals shown on the wiring diagram, often L1 to 2, and the motor switch heater contacts should close when the centrifugal switch is actuated. Any open contact in that path can leave the dryer running with no heat.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Why is my Speed Queen dryer running but not heating?

On an electric model, it may be missing one hot leg of the rated supply, or the heat circuit may be open at the fuse, thermostat, element, timer, selector, heat control, or motor switch. On a gas model, airflow, gas supply, flame sensor, igniter, and gas valve coils are common paths to check.

Can a clogged vent make a Speed Queen dryer stop heating?

Yes. Poor airflow raises heat inside the dryer and can open the thermal fuse or high limit thermostat, so replacing a fuse without clearing the vent can lead to another failure.

Is the thermal fuse resettable?

No. Once the thermal fuse opens, it has to be replaced, and the airflow problem that caused the overheat should be corrected.

Why does my Speed Queen electric dryer tumble with no heat after I reset the breaker?

If the breaker reset doesn't bring heat back, the dryer needs electrical testing. A technician will verify the rated supply voltage at the terminal block, then work through the fuse, thermostats, element, timer or heat control, selector, and motor switch.

Should I try to fix a Speed Queen gas dryer that won't heat?

You can clean the lint screen and check the vent outlet. Anything involving the igniter, gas valve, or burner assembly should be handled by a qualified technician.
