Dryer not spinning on a Whirlpool: what it means and what to check

Your Whirlpool dryer may light up, hum, click, or run the timer while the drum stays still. This page shows the safe checks to make first, then what a technician tests when the fix is inside the cabinet.

Straight answer

A Whirlpool dryer that won't spin usually has an open start circuit, a broken drive belt, or a jammed drum support keeping the motor from turning the drum. The single most common field clue is the motor running while the drum sits still, which points to a worn or broken drive belt.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Listen when you press Start

If the motor runs or hums but the drum doesn't move, stop the cycle and don't keep trying it. That sound usually points toward a broken belt, a jammed drum, or a motor that can't start under load.

  2. Close the door firmly

Open the door, look for clothing caught at the gasket, then close it until the latch catches. Some Whirlpool dryers use more than one latch point, so a door that looks shut may still fail to press the switch.

  3. Try the door switch button

With the door open, press the small door switch button with your finger and listen for a clean click. If the dryer starts only when you press the switch by hand, the door strike, catch, hinge, or switch area is likely worn.

  4. Check Control Lock and the breaker

If the panel is lit but the dryer won't start, look for Control Lock on the display and use the owner's manual to turn it off. For an electric dryer, reset the two-pole dryer breaker once, since one side of a 240-volt feed can trip.

  5. Turn the drum by hand

With the dryer off, open the door and rotate the drum by hand. If it turns with almost no drag, the belt may be broken; if it barely turns, a roller, bearing, or blower wheel may be jammed.

  6. Clear the lint screen and visible vent outlet

A blocked lint path can overheat the dryer and open the thermal fuse, which can make many Whirlpool dryers act dead. Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent flap for lint buildup before another run.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drive belt and belt switchRemove the front or rear access as the model allows, then inspect whether the belt is broken, loose, or routed with the ribbed side away from the drum. On newer Whirlpool designs with a belt switch, an open belt switch can keep the motor from running at all, so the switch is checked for continuity with the belt tension applied.
Door switch and door strikeWith the dryer unplugged, disconnect one door switch terminal and check continuity while the switch is pressed. A good switch shows continuity when pressed; no continuity, a loose switch body, or a broken door probe points to replacement.
Thermal fuseTest the thermal fuse at the blower housing with the dryer unplugged and at least one wire removed. It should show continuity; an open fuse means the motor circuit may be open, and the vent system should be checked so the replacement fuse doesn't open again.
Start switchOn mechanical push-to-start models, test the switch as a momentary contact. It should show continuity only while pressed; no continuity during the press means the start switch has failed.
Drum rollers, idler pulley, blower wheel, and motorWith the belt off, spin the drum rollers, idler pulley, blower wheel, and motor shaft by hand. A seized roller, packed blower wheel, or stiff motor can make the dryer hum, start slowly, or trip the motor protector instead of spinning.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Whirlpool dryer that won't spin?

You can unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and reset the breaker once. If it still won't spin, a reset won't fix a broken belt, open thermal fuse, bad door switch, or seized support part.

Why does my Whirlpool dryer hum but not spin?

A hum means the motor is trying to run. The usual causes are a broken belt, a jammed drum, a stuck blower wheel, or a motor that can't start under load.

Why does the light work but the drum won't turn?

The light uses a different part of the circuit than the motor. A bad door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, belt switch, or control can still stop the motor.

Is it safe to keep trying the dryer if the drum won't move?

No. Repeated starts can overheat the motor or damage the belt system if the drum is jammed.

Does a broken belt make a Whirlpool dryer act completely dead?

On some older dryers, the motor may run while the drum doesn't turn. On some newer dryers, a belt switch can stop the motor, so the dryer may appear to do almost nothing after Start is pressed.
