Whirlpool dryer PF code: what it means and what to check

Your Whirlpool dryer may stop, flash PF, or show the code when you try to restart a load. This page explains what the code means, what you can check safely, and what a technician tests when PF keeps coming back.

Straight answer

The whirlpool dryer pf code means the control saw a power failure while the dryer was running, or saw line noise that looked like bad voltage. The most common cause is a brief power interruption during the cycle.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Restart or clear the code

Touch and hold START to restart the cycle. If you just want to clear the display, press POWER or STOP/CANCEL, depending on your console.

  2. Reset the dryer breaker

If there was a recent outage, turn the dryer breaker off for one minute, then turn it back on. Watch the display for another minute before starting a load.

  3. Wait before pressing buttons

After power is restored, give the control about 10 seconds before pressing keys. Pressing buttons during that power-up delay can bring PF back on some Whirlpool controls.

  4. Check the plug and cord from the outside

Make sure the dryer plug is seated firmly in the wall outlet. If the plug feels loose in the outlet, or you see heat marks, stop using that outlet until it’s checked.

  5. Note when PF appears

A one-time PF after a storm or outage is usually just information. PF that returns with no outage, especially if the dryer goes dead first, points to an intermittent power feed or a control problem.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Incoming power and terminal blockWith live testing done by a technician, the dryer should have 120 volts from L1 to neutral, 120 volts from L2 to neutral, and 240 volts from L1 to L2 on electric models. A dropped leg, loose terminal screw, heat-marked block, or outlet contact that loses grip can set PF even when the display later comes back.
Main electronic controlThe tech verifies steady line voltage into the control with connectors attached, then checks for loose plugs, corrosion, or a board that drops out even though supply stays steady. A classic tell is a dryer that goes blank, wakes up later, then reports PF with no house outage.
Console diagnostics and user interfaceOn Cabrio-style tech sheets, the dryer starts in standby, then More Time and Less Time are pressed in sequence to light all LEDs and show 88. If the console won’t enter diagnostics, the wrong LEDs respond, or an E3 appears in test mode, the user interface, its connector, or the matching control board is suspect.
Wiring connectors and ground pathWhirlpool service notes call for checking connectors before replacing parts, including wires backed out of the plug, failed terminals, and corrosion on board connectors. A loose ground at the outlet, breaker, cord, or dryer frame can also mimic a power fault.
Drive motor short to groundIf PF appears right when START is pressed after the board and supply have been checked, the tech may test from each motor terminal to the motor case with power unplugged. Any continuity to the metal case points to a short to ground.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Whirlpool dryer PF code?

Yes. Hold START to continue the cycle, or press POWER or STOP/CANCEL to clear the display. If it comes right back, the reset didn’t solve the cause.

Why does the dryer show PF if the display has power?

PF reports that the control lost power earlier or saw line noise that looked like bad voltage. The display can light after power returns, then show the stored PF message.

Does PF mean the thermal fuse or thermistor is bad?

Usually no. Whirlpool uses other codes for an open or shorted thermistor, such as E1 or E2 on models with that code set. PF is about the control losing or misreading power.

Is this the same on gas and electric Whirlpool dryers?

Both types can show PF because both have an electronic control that needs steady power. Electric dryers also need both 120-volt legs and 240 volts across the two hot legs for proper operation.

Should I call an electrician or an appliance repair company?

If the outlet is loose, scorched, or the breaker feels suspect, start with an electrician. If the power supply checks good and PF still returns, an appliance technician should test the dryer control, console, and internal wiring.
