GE dishwasher error codes: what each one means

This list covers consumer display messages and technician diagnostic codes confirmed for GE built in and portable dishwashers. Use the first check column for safe items to try with power off; codes marked technician usually need model specific diagnosis before parts are replaced.

Reading the code

On display models, the code appears in the timer or cycle display; no display models may show a blinking Start light or service LED pattern. To clear a code, turn off power at the plug or breaker for 1 to 2 minutes, then restart; for 999 on GDT225, PDT145 and ZDT165 models, hold Cycle Select and Start for 5 seconds, then press any pad. Number plus H is Delay Start, PF is a power interruption, Cup Open is a detergent cup reminder, Lock Controls is control lock, and Demo Mode or Sabbath or Door Wake Up Mode are settings rather than part failures.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dishwasher12
  1. Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
  2. Some models: on the top edge of the door

GE dishwasher error codes

Not all codes appear on all models; C codes are common consumer display codes, while F codes and mixed letter codes vary by model family and control generation.

47 codes

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
H2O / H20 / F86The control detected low water, no fill, or a water supply failure; on some models the Start LED may blink 6 times.Turn off power, confirm the water supply valve is open and the inlet hose is not kinked, then restart.Often a home check
FTD / F56The dishwasher did not drain; on some models the Start LED may blink 5 times.Turn off power, clean the filters and air gap, check for a kinked drain hose, and if a disposer was just installed, confirm the drain plug was removed without putting hands in the disposer.Often a home check
C3The dishwasher will not drain.Turn off power, clean the filters and air gap, and check the visible drain hose for a kink.Often a home check
C1The drain pump has run for more than 2 minutes while trying to pump out water.Turn off power and check the air gap, sink drain, disposer connection and visible drain hose for a restriction.Often a home check
C2The total pump out cycle has exceeded 7 minutes.Press Reset to stop the beep, then turn off power and check the drain path if water remains in the tub.Often a home check
PFThe control detected a power interruption.Select the desired cycle and press Start after power is restored.Often a home check
999On leak alert models, a possible leak was detected; on listed compact models, the control needs a reset. For GDT225, PDT145 and ZDT165 models, hold Cycle Select and Start for 5 seconds; if the model has leak protection or the code returns, use a technician.Usually a technician
LEAK DETECTED / F34Moisture or water was detected in the leak pan or base area.Needs a technician because water in the base or leak pan must be found and corrected; turn off power and water if water is visible.Usually a technician
C4The machine filled twice after a power interruption, or the float switch is stuck or the sump is clogged.Turn off power, remove debris around the float cover and sump area inside the tub, then reset.Often a home check
C5The pump out time was too short; the water supply and float cover are common first checks.Turn off power, confirm the water supply valve is open and tap the float cover gently, then retry the cycle.Often a home check
C6The water temperature stayed too low during the cycle.Run hot water at a nearby faucet before starting; incoming water should be at least 120 F for normal heating.Often a home check
C7The dishwasher water temperature sensor circuit is not operating.Needs a technician because the water temperature sensor circuit must be diagnosed.Usually a technician
C8The detergent cup is blocked from opening fully.Turn off power and move any dish, pan or utensil blocking the detergent cup, then close the door and restart.Often a home check
Cup OpenThe detergent cup has not been closed, so the cycle may not start unless overridden.Close and latch the detergent cup, then press Start again if needed.Often a home check
Number + HDelay Start is active, and the number shows the delay hours left.Cancel Delay Start or wait for the countdown to finish.Often a home check
PrS / F32The pressure sensor is sending an invalid signal to the control; on some models the Start LED may blink 9 times.Needs a technician because the pressure sensor signal, harness and control must be checked.Usually a technician
F33Model specific code: many stainless tub models use F33 for a door switch error, while some plastic tub models use F33 for a low pressure sensor reading.Needs a technician because the door switch, latch, pressure sensor meaning or wiring depends on the model tech sheet.Usually a technician
F36 / F61The current sense module tripped or failed a check, which can stop operation.Needs a technician because the current sense module and related loads must be diagnosed safely.Usually a technician
F16The control detected water temperature that is too high.Needs a technician because the thermistor, harness or control must be checked.Usually a technician
F1 / F2Communication failed between the user interface and the machine control; some models use F1 and others use F2.Needs a technician because the user interface, main control and wiring must be diagnosed.Usually a technician
F3The control is configured for an inverter equipped model but does not detect the inverter.Needs a technician because the control configuration and inverter presence must be checked against the model setup.Usually a technician
F5The inverter is detected on the wrong control personality or has a communication mismatch.Needs a technician because the inverter, main control personality and harness must be checked.Usually a technician
F6Communication with the wireless module was lost on models that have that module.Needs a technician if the dishwasher operation is affected because the wireless module, user interface or wiring may need diagnosis.Usually a technician
F48 / F49The turbidity sensor reading is out of range high or low.Needs a technician because the turbidity sensor and wiring must be checked.Usually a technician
F50 / F51The temperature sensor reading is out of range high or low.Needs a technician because the thermistor, harness and control must be checked.Usually a technician
F52The turbidity sensor failed calibration.Needs a technician because the turbidity sensor calibration and wiring must be checked.Usually a technician
F64 / F144The inverter reported an error to the main control.Needs a technician because the inverter and harness must be checked.Usually a technician
F65The inverter reported no water detected.Turn off power, confirm the water supply valve is open, then use a technician if the code returns.Usually a technician
F80 / F96On many stainless tub models, turbidity readings indicate absent water flow or no water in the tub; some plastic tub guides list F96 as an ignore fault.Turn off power, confirm the water supply valve is open and filters are clean, then use a technician if the code returns.Usually a technician
F97The control did not detect an expected heat source.Needs a technician because the heater, thermistor and control must be checked.Usually a technician
F98The sump did not drain as expected based on turbidity readings.Turn off power and check the filter, air gap and visible drain hose first; if clear, a technician should check the pump and sensor circuit.Usually a technician
F99The wash water did not reach the minimum required temperature.Needs a technician because the heater, thermistor and control must be checked.Usually a technician
F112 / F155The control detected a stuck key or tactile button.Dry the control area and press each pad once; if a pad is stuck or the code returns, use a technician.Often a home check

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a GE dishwasher code?

Yes. Turn off power for 1 to 2 minutes, then restart the dishwasher. If the code returns, use the table and avoid repeated resets.

Why does FTD, F56 or C3 keep coming back?

Those usually point to a drain restriction, drain hose issue or drain pump problem. Check the filter, air gap, disposer connection and visible hose kink with power off, then use a technician if the drain path is clear.

Are C codes and F codes the same type of code?

No. C codes are common consumer display codes on many electronic models, while F codes often come from diagnostic modes or newer display controls and can vary by model family.

Is 1H or 2H a fault code?

No. A number plus H means Delay Start is set, so cancel the delay or wait for the countdown.

Still showing the problem after the checks?

Call and describe what you tried. You'll be connected with an independent repair company near you.
