GE dishwasher not running: what to check before repair

Your GE dishwasher may light up and beep, then sit there. Or it may be fully dead with no panel lights at all. This page helps you sort the simple settings from the failures that need a technician.

Straight answer

A GE dishwasher not running usually means the control either isn't powered or isn't seeing a valid start condition because the door latch, Control Lock, Delay Start, Demo Mode, Sleep or Sabbath Mode, float, leak protection, or power path is blocking the cycle. One of the first things to check is a door that isn't fully latched, including a rack, cabinet trim, insulation, or the counter edge keeping the strike from closing the latch switch.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Cancel Control Lock

Many GE models with electronic controls have a lock-out setting that keeps the buttons from starting a cycle. Look for a lock light or a padlock icon, then use the button combo in the owner's manual for your exact model.

  2. Clear Delay Start

If the display shows a delay time such as 2H or 4H, the dishwasher is waiting to start later. Cancel the delay, choose a new cycle, close the door, then press Start.

  3. Close the door firmly enough to trip the latch

Pull both racks in, move tall items away from the door opening, then check that the door isn't hitting cabinet trim or the countertop. GE dishwashers won't run until the latch switch reports a closed door.

  4. Reset the control

Turn power off at the breaker or unplug the dishwasher if it has a cord. Wait about 2 minutes, restore power, choose a fresh cycle, then press Start with the door closed.

  5. Check for a stuck float or leak-protect warning

If the machine fills poorly, check the flood float only as your manual allows. On GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT, and ZDT models, remove the Fine and Ultra Fine filters and check the sump float for debris or damage. On other designs, leave the float switch to a tech. If the display says LEAK DETECTED, arrange service.

  6. If it hums, add hot water on certain GE platforms

On model families that begin GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT, or ZDT, GE says to pour one pint of hot tap water into the bottom of the tub, press Start, then let it run for five minutes. This is only for a slight hum with no run, not for a dead control panel.

Water comes in through a valve behind the lower kick panel. A float in the front corner of the tub floor shuts it off, so a stuck float stops the fill. The door latch has to click shut or the cycle won't start.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dishwasher12
  1. Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
  2. Some models: on the top edge of the door

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Door latch switchWith power disconnected, the tech confirms the strike actually moves the latch switches. On Rx1, a closed switch should read zero or nearly zero ohms; a different reading points to a bad latch switch or latch assembly.
Incoming power and junction boxOn a dead unit, the tech checks the hardwire or cord connection before blaming the dishwasher. Burn marks, loose wire nuts, or no proper 120-volt supply between black and white at the junction box mean the control may never be getting power.
Thermal fuseOn GE electronic-control models that use a thermal fuse at the control area, the tech disconnects power, removes the fuse leads, then checks continuity. Zero or nearly zero ohms is expected; an open reading means the fuse has failed and the reason for overheating should be checked.
Timer or electronic controlIf the latch is good, the tech checks whether the control starts the first drain step and sends power to the load it should run. On manual timer models, the timer contacts are checked against the wiring diagram; some working timers read in the 2000 to 3500 ohm range, but the model sheet controls the call.
Selector switch or motor start relayOn models with mechanical option buttons, each selector button is checked for the change called for by the diagram, often infinity released and zero ohms pressed. On older GE models with a motor start relay, the coil and plunger-operated contacts should read zero or nearly zero ohms when activated.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a GE dishwasher that isn't running?

A reset can clear a stuck control, blinking-light condition, or paused cycle. Turn power off for about 2 minutes, restore power, then pick a new cycle. If the same fault returns, a part test is the next step.

Why does my GE dishwasher have lights but won't start?

Power is reaching the control, so start with Control Lock, Delay Start, and the door latch. If those check out, the latch switch, float, leak sensor, user interface, or main control may be stopping the start signal.

Why is my GE dishwasher dead with no lights?

That points more toward the power path, thermal fuse on models that use one, user interface, or main control. A technician should verify power at the junction box before replacing boards.

Does this apply to GE Profile dishwashers too?

Yes, the same start-blocking items apply to GE and GE Profile dishwashers. The button combo for Control Lock, Demo Mode, Sleep Mode, or Sabbath Mode can change by model, so the manual matters.

Should I call for service if the dishwasher is under warranty?

If the appliance is still covered by its product warranty, use the maker's service path before paying an independent repair company. Avoid opening panels yourself if coverage may depend on authorized service.
