GE oven error codes: what each one means

This table covers common GE range and wall oven codes for models with electronic oven controls. Match the exact display code first, then use the first check only if it can be done from the control panel, the door area, or by turning power off. If a code comes back after a reset, contact a repair company for a technician.

Reading the code

Codes usually appear in the electronic oven control display as an F code, a text message, or a status symbol. To clear a one-time fault, turn the oven off at the breaker, or unplug it if you can do so without pulling the unit out, wait one to two minutes, then restore power. LOC is Control Lock, ERR is an invalid entry, OFF can mean the oven is too hot for self clean, and a backwards C symbol means Sabbath Mode.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

GE oven & range error codes

This list covers common GE support codes for ranges and wall ovens with electronic oven controls; not every past or present model code or code meaning is published.

16 codes

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
F2 / F20The control detected oven temperature above a preset safety threshold. Full guide →Turn the oven off, let it cool completely, reset power once, and use a technician if the code returns because an overheat condition can involve the sensor, control, or heating circuit.Usually a technician
F3 / F4The oven temperature sensor circuit is reading out of range, often open on F3 or shorted on F4 in older fault tables.Reset power once, and if the code returns during preheat or cooking, a technician should check the oven temperature sensor circuit.Usually a technician
F7The control detected a stuck, shorted, or failed keypad input. Full guide →With power off, wipe and dry the control area and make sure no key is being held down; if the code returns, a technician usually needs to replace the keypad or control part.Usually a technician
F0 / F1 / F6On GE's common support table, these codes point to a keypanel problem, but some model tech sheets use F1 or F6 for control or gas lockout faults.Reset power once, and if the code returns without any key being pressed, a technician should diagnose the keypad, control, and model-specific circuit.Usually a technician
F5 / F8 / FFThe electronic oven control has detected an internal control fault.Reset power once, and if the code returns, use a technician because the electronic control is the likely failed part.Usually a technician
F9 / FCOn GE's common support table, F9 and FC point to the door lock circuit, but some wall oven tech sheets use F9 for a fan or airflow switch fault.Let the oven cool, make sure the door is fully closed, reset power once, and call a technician if F9 or FC returns so the model tech sheet can be checked.Usually a technician
F350The upper cooling fan circuit has a fault or the cooling fan is obstructed.Turn power off and clear anything blocking the oven vent area; if the code returns, the cooling fan circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician
Bad LinePower is applied to the oven, but the unit is not wired correctly.Needs a technician or electrician because the appliance has detected a wiring or power supply problem that must be corrected safely.Usually a technician
Unlock DoorThe door did not unlock after a self clean cycle.Let the oven cool completely, turn power off for 30 seconds, then restore power without forcing the latch.Often a home check
Loc DoorThe display is flashing a locked door message when self clean has not been selected.Check whether Control Lock is on, then use the LOC DOOR reset steps in the owner's manual; if it keeps flashing, a technician should check the lock circuit.Often a home check
FDThe control detected a problem with the meat probe or the probe receptacle.Let the oven cool, remove the probe by its plug with an oven mitt if needed, reconnect it firmly if you need probe cooking, and use a technician if the code returns.Often a home check
F96 / F97 / F7XThe control detected an internal component failure. Full guide →Reset power once, and if the code returns, use a technician because an internal component likely needs diagnosis or replacement.Usually a technician
LOCControl Lock or Child Lockout is active and the oven controls are disabled.Use the unlock steps in the owner's manual; many touch controls unlock by holding 9 and 0 or a lock pad for about 3 seconds.Often a home check
ERRThe control rejected the entry because it was not valid for the selected cooking mode.Touch Clear/Off or Cancel, then enter a valid temperature, time, or mode setting.Often a home check
OFFThe oven is too hot for the selected self clean or cooking operation after a clean cycle.Let the oven cool longer, then try the bake, broil, or self clean setting again.Often a home check
⊃The oven is set for Sabbath Mode, not a failure condition.Exit Sabbath Mode using the button sequence in the owner's manual for your model.Often a home check

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a GE oven error code?

Turn the oven off at the breaker, or unplug it only if the plug is safely accessible, wait one to two minutes, then restore power. If the code comes back, a technician should diagnose it.

Why does the same code keep coming back after I reset power?

A reset can clear a temporary control glitch, but a returning code usually means the control is still seeing the same failed sensor, keypad, fan, lock, probe, or control circuit.

Are LOC, ERR, OFF, and the backwards C symbol actual faults?

Usually no. LOC is Control Lock, ERR is an invalid control entry, OFF can mean the oven is too hot for self clean, and the backwards C symbol means Sabbath Mode.

Do older and newer GE ovens use the same codes?

Many common F codes overlap, but meanings can vary by model family and year. Check the model manual if your display shows a code that is not in this table, or if your manual gives a different meaning.

Still showing the problem after the checks?

Call and describe what you tried. You'll be connected with an independent repair company near you.
