LG washer code dE: what it means and what to check

Your LG washer may click, flash the door lock light, then stop with dE, dE1, or dE2 on the display. This page shows the safe checks to try first, then what a technician tests if the code comes right back.

Straight answer

LG washer code dE means the door didn’t lock or the control didn’t see the door locked after you started a cycle. The single most common cause is something keeping the door or latch from closing cleanly, such as clothing caught at the rubber gasket.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Open and re-close the door

Open the door fully, then close it with firm, even pressure. Don’t slam it. If the door was just sitting a little proud of the latch, the code may clear right away.

  2. Check the rubber gasket area

Look around the gray door boot for a sock, washcloth, drawstring, or bulky cuff caught between the glass and the rubber. This is the owner mistake techs see a lot: the door looks shut, but the hook never reaches the lock switch.

  3. Reduce an overpacked load

If the drum is packed tight, pull a few items out and try again. LG notes that too much laundry or items stuck near the door can keep the lock from setting.

  4. Look at the door latch hook

Check the hook on the inside of the door. If the tip is broken, bent, or loose enough to wiggle up and down a lot, stop using the washer until a technician checks it.

  5. Reset the washer

Turn the washer off, unplug it or switch off the breaker, then press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds with power off. Restore power and try the cycle again. LG says this can normally clear a dE door-lock fault.

  6. Try an empty cycle

If the code showed during Tub Clean, make sure the drum is empty and the door area is clear. Start the cycle again. If dE returns before the drum moves, it’s usually past a homeowner check.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Door lock assemblyWith power removed, a technician can test the lock circuit from the main PCB area. The source test calls for 700 to 1500 ohms between the noise filter brown lead and the orange wire at the white three-wire lock plug, then 60 to 90 ohms between the brown lead and blue wire. A failed reading points to the door lock assembly.
Door latch hookThe hook on the door should be intact, spring back hard when pushed to the side, and have almost no up-and-down play. A broken tip, weak spring return, or sloppy movement keeps the hook from pressing the lock switch cleanly.
Main PCB lock outputIf the resistance checks pass, a technician checks for about 120 VAC from the board during a lock call, using the brown lead at the noise filter and the orange lead at the main PCB lock plug. No lock voltage at that point points back to the main PCB or its power feed.
Door lock switch contactThe same lock plug test includes a contact check from the blue wire at the square white plug to the black wire at the flat two-wire plug. The expected reading is infinity; a shorted reading means the lock switch state is wrong.
Door boot and retaining springAfter a lock replacement, the boot lip and metal retaining spring have to sit fully in the front-panel groove. If the spring sits out of the groove, the boot can bunch at the latch side and cause another dE complaint.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG washer code dE?

Yes. Turn the washer off, remove power, hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, then restore power and try again. If the code returns right away, the reset didn’t fix the lock fault.

What is the difference between dE, dE1, and dE2?

dE and dE1 point to the door not closing properly or the washer being unable to lock it. dE2 means the door is shut, then the lock still didn’t set.

Does dE always mean the door lock is bad?

No. First rule out clothing in the gasket, an overpacked load, and a door that wasn’t fully latched. If those checks pass, the door lock assembly becomes the likely part.

Does this apply to front-load and top-load LG washers?

LG’s dE, dE1, and dE2 steps are aimed at front-load washers. If a vertical-load LG shows dE, the fault is still in the lid or door lock area, but the parts layout is different.

Should I check warranty coverage before repair?

If the washer is still within LG’s coverage term, check that before replacing parts. A repair company can diagnose the lock fault, but parts coverage depends on the unit and its paperwork.
