LG washer won't turn on: what to check first

If your LG washer is dark, silent, or the buttons don't respond, start with power and control reset checks before you assume the machine is dead. This guide walks through the safe checks at the front of the machine, then shows what a technician tests inside.

Straight answer

An LG washer that won't turn on usually has no usable power reaching the controls, or the electronic control has locked up and needs a reset. The most common cause is a tripped outlet or breaker, especially when the display is dark.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the outlet and breaker

Plug a lamp or hair dryer into the same outlet the washer uses. If that device doesn't run normally, reset the breaker or the GFCI outlet if one is used.

  2. Do the LG control reset

Turn the washer off, unplug it or switch off the breaker, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds while it has no power. Plug it back in and try Power again.

  3. Look for Control Lock

If the display works but buttons won't respond, look for CL or a lock icon. Hold the button or button pair marked Control Lock or Child Lock for 3 seconds, since LG says the lock can stay active after power is turned off.

  4. Close the door firmly

A front-load LG won't start a cycle if the door switch doesn't see the latch. Push the door closed, clear clothing from the gasket area, then try Start/Pause again.

  5. Check the panel surface

Moisture, detergent film, or a stuck button area can make a touch panel act dead. Dry the panel with a soft cloth, remove any plastic film or tape near the power button, then try again.

  6. Read any code on the display

If the washer shows a code instead of staying dark, treat that code as the lead. A code points to a specific fault, while a blank display points more toward power, the noise filter, the main board, or the user interface.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Noise filter assemblyA technician checks for 120 VAC entering the filter at the cord side, then 120 VAC leaving toward the main control. If voltage goes in but doesn't come out, the filter or its internal fuse path has failed.
Main PCBWith proper voltage present after the noise filter, the small red LED on the main board should light. If the LED stays off with 120 VAC feeding the board, the main PCB is the likely failed part.
User interface controlIf the main board has 120 VAC and the red LED is lit, but the display and Power button stay dead, the user interface control moves up the list. On touch-panel models, a compressed spring contact behind the plastic power area can leave a tiny gap, so the button can feel normal while the board never sees the touch.
Door lock assemblyA technician checks the lock for a short to ground and for damage at the connector. A 0 ohm reading to ground is a bad tell, and a shorted lock can kill a control board.
Drain pumpIf a replacement control board failed quickly, the pump is checked as a load that may be shorting the board. The tech tests the pump circuit for a short to ground and compares pump resistance to the model tech sheet before powering a new board.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset an LG washer that will not turn on?

Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds while the washer has no power. Restore power and press Power again.

Can Control Lock make an LG washer seem dead?

Control Lock usually lets the Power button work, but it can make the other buttons seem unresponsive. Look for CL or a lock icon, then hold the marked lock button or button pair for 3 seconds.

What does the red light on the LG washer control board mean?

That small red LED is a sign the main board is getting power. If it lights but the display stays dead, the user interface or its connection becomes a likely suspect.

Should I replace the main board first?

No. A technician should confirm outlet power, noise filter output, and the red LED behavior before calling the main board bad. If a board already failed once, the door lock and drain pump need short checks before another board is powered.

Is this different on LG front-load and top-load washers?

The basic checks are the same: outlet, reset, lock setting, door or lid closure. Front-load service examples often focus on the noise filter, main PCB, and user interface, while touch-panel machines can have a dead power-button area.
