Maytag dryer AF code: what it means and what to check
Your Maytag dryer may flash AF, show Check Vent, or keep drying while the message stays on. This page walks through the airflow checks a homeowner can do, then the thermistor tests a technician uses when the vent path is clean.

The Maytag dryer AF code means the dryer has detected restricted airflow through the lint path or exhaust vent. The most common cause is a clogged, crushed, or overlong vent run, even when the lint screen looks clean.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Clean the lint screen and lint chute opening
Pull the lint screen and clean it by hand before every load. If dryer sheet residue has coated the mesh, wash the screen with warm water and a soft brush, then let it dry before reinstalling it.
- Look behind the dryer
Check the short vent from the dryer to the wall. A crushed foil hose, tight bend, or dryer pushed too far back can trigger AF even when the outside vent looks clear.
- Check airflow at the outside hood
Run the dryer on a heated cycle for 5 to 10 minutes. At the outside hood, the airflow should feel close to a hair dryer on high speed; weak flow means the full vent run and hood need cleaning.
- Try a heated Timed Dry cycle
Touch any key to clear the code, then choose a heated Timed Dry cycle and restart the dryer. If AF comes back after the lint screen, hose, hood, and vent run are clean, the dryer may be reading airflow wrong.
- Give the dryer room air
If the dryer sits in a small laundry room, test it once with the room door open. A tight room can starve the dryer for makeup air, especially when the door is closed during a cycle.
- Check the door seal by sight
Make sure the door gasket is seated and not hanging loose. A bad seal can upset airflow readings and drying performance.
Conditions that make this more likely
Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think
Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I reset the Maytag dryer AF code?
Touching any key can clear AF from the display and return the time remaining. The Check Vent light can also clear when the cycle ends, when Power is touched, or when the door is opened, but it will return if the airflow fault is still present.
Is it safe to keep running the dryer with AF showing?
The dryer can keep running with AF on the display. Poor airflow can stretch dry times and cause the dryer to run hotter than it should, so don't ignore a code that keeps coming back.
Why does AF show on Auto or Bedding but not Timed Dry?
On some Maytag dryers, the vent check feature works during Automatic Cycles. Heavy loads such as bedding can also expose weak airflow because they shed lint and hold moisture longer.
What if the vent was already cleaned?
Check the short hose behind the dryer, the outside flap, and room air first. If those pass, a technician should test the exhaust thermistor, inlet thermistor if used, wiring, and control board.
Does AF mean the heating element is bad?
Usually, no. AF is an airflow or airflow-sensing fault, so the dryer may still heat while it complains about restricted airflow.
