Maytag dryer code PF: what it means and what to check
Your Maytag dryer stopped mid-cycle and the display says PF. This page explains what that code means, how to clear it safely, and what a technician checks when it keeps coming back.

The Maytag dryer code PF means the control detected a power failure or an unstable power condition during a cycle. The most common cause is a real power interruption, such as an outage, breaker trip, voltage dip, or plug connection that briefly lost contact.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Clear or restart the cycle
Press POWER to clear the display, or touch and hold START if you want to resume the interrupted cycle. If the code happened right after an outage or storm, this may be the only step needed.
- Give the dryer its power-up pause
After power comes back, wait about 10 seconds before pressing buttons. Maytag notes that pressing keys too soon during power-up can make PF appear.
- Reset the dryer breaker after a known outage
If there was a recent outage, turn the dryer breaker fully off for 5 minutes, then turn it back on. Watch the dryer for 5 minutes after it powers up, then try a short timed cycle.
- Check the plug and outlet from the outside
With the dryer off, look for a plug that sits loose, a hot or burnt smell, discoloration, melted plastic, or a damaged cord. Stop using the dryer if you see any of those signs.
- Notice what else lost power
Flickering lights, other appliances resetting, or a breaker that trips again point away from a simple dryer reset. Don’t keep resetting a breaker that trips again.
Conditions that make this more likely
Check both breakers
Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

What does PF mean on a Maytag dryer?
PF means Power Failure. The dryer control saw power drop out, come back unstable, or get interrupted while a cycle was running.
How do I clear the PF code on a Maytag dryer?
Press POWER to clear the display. If you want to continue the interrupted load, touch and hold START instead.
Why does PF come back after I reset the dryer?
A returning PF code usually means the dryer is still seeing unstable power or an intermittent connection. The outlet, cord, breaker, terminal block, and then the main control need to be checked in that order.
Is PF the same on gas and electric Maytag dryers?
The code means power failure on both. The electrical checks differ because a gas dryer uses a 120-volt supply, while most electric dryers need both 120-volt legs plus 240 volts across the two hot legs.
Can I keep using the dryer after a PF code?
If it happened once after a known outage and the dryer runs normally, it’s usually okay to keep using it. Stop if PF returns, the breaker trips, the plug or outlet smells burnt, or the cord looks damaged.
