Maytag dryer not starting: what to check and when to call a technician

You press Start on the Maytag dryer and nothing happens, or the lights come on but the drum never turns. This guide walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the dryer still won’t run.

Straight answer

A Maytag dryer not starting means the motor start circuit is being stopped by power, a setting, the door switch, or a failed safety part. The most common failed part is the thermal fuse, usually after lint buildup or a restricted vent makes the dryer overheat.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Hold Start long enough

On many Maytag dryers, the Start or Hold to Start button has to be pressed firmly for 2 to 5 seconds. A quick tap can make the dryer seem dead.

  2. Check Control Lock and cycle choice

If the Control Lock or Child Lock light is on, the panel may ignore Start until the lock is turned off. Also use a normal Auto Dry or Timed Dry cycle while testing, since some options delay tumble.

  3. Reset the breaker and avoid an extension cord

Make sure the cord is fully seated. For an electric dryer, flip the paired dryer breakers off, then back on, because one side of the circuit can trip. Use a proper dryer outlet, not an extension cord.

  4. Close the door firmly

Open the door, move any clothing away from the latch, then close it until it clicks. Press the small door switch tab by hand; it should click and spring back, not hang loose or feel floppy.

  5. Look for lint and a crushed vent hose

Clean the lint screen, then look behind the dryer for a smashed or kinked vent hose. If the dryer had been taking extra cycles to dry before it quit, a blown thermal fuse from poor airflow moves much higher on the list.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Thermal fuseOn many rear-service Maytag dryers, this is the small white fuse on the blower housing, often with two blue wires. With the dryer unplugged and the wires removed, a good fuse shows continuity or near 0 ohms; an open reading means it blew, so the vent path must be checked before a new fuse is installed.
Door switchThe switch should make a clear click when the door tab is pressed, and the lever should spring back. A technician checks continuity through the switch with the door closed or the tab pressed; no continuity, a broken lever, or a floppy tab means the switch has failed.
Start switchThe start switch is tested at the control panel with the dryer unplugged and the wires removed. It should show continuity only while the Start button is held; no continuity during the press points to a bad switch.
Drive motor and blower wheelIf Start makes a low hum, the technician checks for a blocked blower wheel or a drum that is binding before condemning the motor. If the blower is clear, the belt is off for testing, and the motor still only hums or will not turn properly, the motor is the likely failure.
Incoming power, electric modelsA technician checks for 208 to 240 volts across the two hot legs at the outlet or terminal block. If only one leg is present, the dryer may light the console but fail to start or heat, which points to the home electrical supply rather than a dryer part.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can a Maytag dryer thermal fuse be reset?

No. Once the thermal fuse opens, it has to be replaced. The vent, lint chute, and blower area should be checked too, or the new fuse can fail again.

Why are the lights on but my Maytag dryer won’t start?

The control panel can still light up when the motor circuit is stopped by a blown thermal fuse, bad door switch, failed start switch, or partial power on an electric dryer. That is why a meter test is needed before parts are replaced.

Should I replace the Start button first?

Usually no. The start switch can fail, but the thermal fuse and door switch are checked first on a no-start Maytag dryer.

Is it safe to bypass the thermal fuse for testing?

No. The thermal fuse is a fire safety part. A technician can test it with a meter while the dryer is unplugged.

Does this apply to gas and electric Maytag dryers?

Yes, the door switch, start switch, motor, and thermal fuse checks are similar. The power check differs: gas dryers use a standard outlet, while electric dryers need the full 208 to 240 volt supply.
