Samsung washer SUD code: what it means and how to clear it

Your Samsung washer may stop mid-cycle, flash SUD or SUDS, then sit there while the door stays locked. This page shows what to try first, what the small drain filter has to do with it, and when the fault points to a failed part.

Straight answer

The samsung washer sud code means the washer detected too many suds or a suds-lock condition during the wash or rinse part of the cycle. The most common cause is too much detergent or detergent that isn't marked HE for a high-efficiency washer.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Let the suds settle, then reset power

Pause the washer, power it off, then unplug it for a few minutes. If the washer is stuck on SUD after the foam is gone, a power reset can clear the display so you can start a rinse or drain cycle.

  2. Run rinse and spin with no detergent

Take the laundry out if the door unlocks, then run Rinse and Spin with no soap or softener. Repeat if you still see foam in the drum or in the door glass.

  3. Check the detergent bottle

Use only HE detergent, then cut the amount way back for normal loads. Front-load Samsung washers use little water, so a cap filled like an older washer can leave residue and keep calling for extra rinses.

  4. Clean the front drain pump filter

Unplug the washer. Open the small lower front access door, drain water through the little hose into a shallow pan, then twist out the filter and remove lint, coins, hair, cloth pieces, or color-catcher sheets. On many Samsung front loaders, that filter knob has to be pushed inward while turning or it just clicks.

  5. Run an empty hot wash

After the filter is clean, run an empty hot cycle or self-clean cycle with no additives. This helps rinse old detergent film from the tub, boot, and sump area.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pump filter and pump sumpDrain the machine through the service hose, remove the filter, and inspect the filter cup and sump for lint mats, coins, fabric strips, hair pins, or sheets that block flow. A cracked filter cap, torn seal, or debris behind the filter can leave soapy water in the sump and bring the SUD message back.
Drain pumpRun Drain or Spin in service mode or a normal drain step and listen for a steady pump sound with strong discharge at the standpipe. A pump that hums, rattles, starts only sometimes, or can't lift water through the drain hose after the filter is clear is suspect.
Pressure switch or water-level sensorInspect the small air tube for detergent sludge, kinks, or water trapped in the line. With power removed, the switch can be checked for continuity at the proper terminals on models that use a switch style sensor, where a good closed contact may read 0 ohms or beep on a meter.
Drain hose and standpipe pathCheck for a kinked hose, a clogged hose run, or a standpipe issue that slows the drain. Slow draining can hold soapy water in the tub, causing extra rinse attempts and a repeated suds code.
Main control boardOnly move here after the drain pump, pressure system, wiring plugs, and detergent use check out. A bad board is more likely when the washer misreads inputs or keeps the SUD routine active even after the pressure signal and drain action test normally.

Common questions about appliance repair

Is SUD the same as 5UD, Sd, or 5d?

Yes. On Samsung washer displays, those versions usually mean the same excess-suds fault. The 5 can look like an S, so don't treat 5UD as a separate code.

Can I reset a Samsung washer SUD code?

You can unplug the washer for a few minutes, then plug it back in. That may clear the display, but it won't remove soap left in the tub or a clog in the filter.

Why does SUD come back when I don't see bubbles?

The washer may still have detergent residue in the sump, a slow drain, or a pressure sensor line coated with soap film. A clogged filter can also trap soapy water where you can't see it.

Can I keep using the washer with the SUD code?

Don't keep adding detergent or restarting full loads. Clear the suds with rinse cycles and clean the filter first, because repeated suds-lock routines can make cycles run long and stress the drain pump.

Is a Samsung SUD code covered by warranty?

Check your Samsung warranty terms and purchase date. Detergent use, overloading, or a clogged filter may be treated differently than a failed pump, pressure switch, or control board.
