UE code on Samsung washer: what it means and what to check

A Samsung washer usually shows UE when it gets to spin, tumbles, then stops instead of ramping up. This page explains the simple load checks first, then the repair faults a technician looks for when the code keeps coming back.

Straight answer

A UE code on Samsung washer means the control detected an unbalanced load during spin and stopped the cycle to protect the machine. The most common cause is laundry bunched to one side, especially one bulky item like a bath mat, blanket or large towel.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Rebalance the load

Open the washer and spread the clothes around the drum or basket. If you're washing one heavy item, add two or three towels so the washer has weight on more than one side.

  2. Run drain mode if the door is locked

Select Spin, then change the spin setting to No Spin or zero if your model has that option. Samsung uses this to drain remaining water, which can make a wet load too heavy to balance.

  3. Check the floor and leveling feet

The washer needs to sit on a flat, stable surface. Press down on opposite corners; if it rocks, adjust the feet until the cabinet sits solid.

  4. Remove items from the washer lid or top

Take off detergent bottles, baskets or stored items. Extra weight on the cabinet can throw off the way some models read balance during calibration.

  5. Run calibration with an empty drum

Empty the washer first. On many Samsung models, power the unit on, hold Temp and Delay End plus for 3 seconds until CB appears, then press Start/Pause; the drum turns both ways for about 3 minutes and the display shows 0 when done.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Suspension rods or suspension springsRun a spin with a medium wet load and watch basket travel. Weak rods let the tub bang the cabinet, lean to one side, or keep bouncing after the drum stops; off-brand rod sets can have springs that are too soft for some Samsung top-load washers.
Main control board balance circuitIf the washer gives UE before spin speed builds, or gives UE when the basket is stable, the technician checks stored faults and verifies the basket can rotate normally. On some Samsung top-load cases, a failed balance sensing circuit on the main PCB causes UE even after the suspension has been replaced.
Door lock or lid lockCheck that the lock reports closed and stays locked as the washer tries to enter spin. A lock that drops out can stop proper spin entry and may be mistaken for an out-of-balance fault.
Tub bearing and spin basketSpin the basket by hand with the washer empty, then lift slightly at the basket rim. Grinding, wobble, or excess play points to bearing or basket trouble that can make the control see unstable rotation.
Leveling and cabinet conditionWith the washer empty, the technician checks all feet, cabinet twist, and whether the tub hangs centered. A twisted cabinet or uneven footing can pass a quick homeowner check yet still trip UE under a wet load.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Samsung washer UE code?

You can power the washer off, then back on, but that only clears the display. If the load is still bunched up or the washer is out of level, UE will come back when spin starts.

Does UE mean my Samsung washer is broken?

Usually, no. UE most often points to the load, the floor, or calibration, so start there before assuming a part has failed.

Why does UE happen with towels and blankets?

Towels and blankets hold a lot of water, then clump on one side of the drum. Add a few similar items and avoid washing one bulky piece by itself.

What if the Samsung washer shows UE when it is empty?

An empty-drum UE is more suspicious. A technician will look for a false balance reading, control board fault, lock issue, or a basket that isn't rotating cleanly.

Is UE the same on front-load and top-load Samsung washers?

The code still means unbalanced spin. Top-load models often point toward suspension rods when the problem repeats, while front-load models make leveling, load mix, and tub movement the first checks.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
