Whirlpool oven error codes: what each one means

This list covers Whirlpool wall ovens and the oven controls in Whirlpool ranges. Use the code to identify the system the control flagged, then try only the safe first check shown here. If a code returns after a power reset, a technician or electrician should diagnose it.

Reading the code

Whirlpool oven and range displays may show F# E#, E# F#, F##, FC E#, PF, LOC, SAB, or a plain message. To clear a fault, switch the breaker off for one minute, turn it back on, then watch the display for one minute; on some ranges, Control Lock clears by holding START or START/ENTER for 3 to 5 seconds, but check the model guide. LOC, Lock or Locked is control lock, PF or a flashing clock is power loss, SAB, 5Ab, or 5A6 is Sabbath mode, C means Celsius, CAL is calibration, and Demo or Showroom mode means heating may be turned off by a setting rather than a failed oven part.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

Whirlpool oven & range error codes

Whirlpool has used different code formats across controls, so the same fault may appear as F# E#, E# F#, F##, FC E#, or a model specific numeric code on some models.

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
F9E0 / F9The control detected an incorrect power connection, a miswired supply, or power line noise that looked like incorrect voltage. Full guide →Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if F9 or F9E0 returns, have a qualified electrician verify the supply because the appliance may be wired wrong.Usually a technician
F2E1 / F2The control sees a stuck or shorted key, or a keypad function error.Switch the breaker off for one minute, then wipe only the outside of the control area dry before restarting; if the code returns, the keypad or user interface needs diagnosis.Usually a technician
F3E0 / F3 / F3E1The oven temperature sensor circuit is open, shorted, or reporting an invalid reading. Full guide →Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart after the oven is cool; if the code returns, the temperature sensor circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician

F6E1 / F6E3The control detected an over temperature condition in the main, upper, lower oven, or warming drawer depending on model.Turn the oven off, switch the breaker off for one minute, and let the oven cool; if the code returns, stop using heat until a technician checks it.Usually a technician
F6E0 / F6E6 / F6E9The user interface or oven appliance manager lost communication.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, a technician should check the communication wiring and controls.Usually a technician
F2E0Depending on the control, the keypad is disconnected, shorted, or the control cannot detect it correctly.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, the user interface or keypad circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician
F5 / F5E0 / F5E2The door switch and latch switch readings do not agree, often during self clean. With power off and the oven cool, make sure the door is fully closed and not blocked; if the code returns, the door switch or latch switch needs diagnosis.Usually a technician
F8E2 / F8E3The high speed cooling fan reading is too slow or too fast. With power off and the oven cool, make sure the cooling vents are not covered; if the code returns, the cooling fan circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician
F1E1The appliance manager, control relay board, or oven control detected an internal control or EEPROM error.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, the control needs a technician.Usually a technician
F3E2Depending on the control, this can mean a warming drawer sensor fault or a bake or broil over temperature condition.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart after the oven is cool; if the code returns, the sensor or over temperature circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician
F3E3 / F3E9On probe models the meat probe circuit is shorted; on some older ranges F3E3 can mean a clean cycle over temperature condition. If your model uses a probe, switch power off and make sure the probe is fully seated before restarting; if the code returns, a technician should check the probe or sensor circuit.Usually a technician
F2E2The control detected a cancel key fault, keypad fault, or rotary encoder open or shorted depending on model.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, the keypad, cancel key, or oven knob encoder needs a technician.Usually a technician
F5E3The lower or left oven door switch and latch switch readings do not agree, depending on model. With power off and the oven cool, make sure the lower or left oven door is fully closed and not blocked; if the code returns, the door or latch switch needs diagnosis.Usually a technician
F5E5The oven did not reach self clean temperature in the expected time. With power off and the oven cool, make sure the door closes fully and the door gasket is not packed with debris; if the code returns, a technician should check the door seal and hinges.Usually a technician
F6E4 / F6E8F6E4 is a user interface and appliance manager state mismatch. F6E8 can point to microwave appliance manager control or wiring on combination ovens.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, a technician should diagnose the oven control, user interface, or combo oven electronics.Usually a technician
F1E2Depending on model, this can mean an analog to digital control error or another control electronics fault.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, a technician should diagnose the control electronics.Usually a technician
F1E5On some ranges this is a sensor out of range fault; on some combination wall ovens it can point to the microwave inverter, magnetron, or wiring.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, a technician should diagnose the control or combination oven electronics.Usually a technician
F1E7The printed circuit board thermistor is open or shorted.Switch the breaker off for one minute and restart; if the code returns, the control board thermistor circuit needs a technician.Usually a technician

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a Whirlpool oven error code?

Switch the oven breaker off for one minute, turn it back on, then watch the display for one minute. If the same fault returns, use the table to decide whether a technician or an electrician should diagnose it.

Why does the code come back after I reset power?

A reset only clears the control memory for a moment. If the sensor, keypad, latch, fan, wiring, or control fault is still present, the oven will show the code again.

Why does my older Whirlpool oven show F1, F2, F3, F5, or F9 instead of an F# E# code?

Older controls often used shorter F codes, while newer controls usually show F# E# or may alternate the F and E parts on the display. Use your model guide first because a few codes changed meaning by control family.

Are LOC, PF, SAB, or Demo Mode repair codes?

No. LOC means the controls are locked, PF or a flashing clock means power loss, SAB or 5Ab means Sabbath mode, and Demo or Showroom mode means the oven may not heat until that mode is turned off.
