Whirlpool oven not turning on: what to check first

Your Whirlpool oven may have a dead display, a working clock that won't start bake, or burners that work while the oven stays cold. This page walks through the checks you can do safely, then shows what a technician tests when it points to a failed part.

Straight answer

A Whirlpool oven not turning on usually means the control isn't getting usable power, the control is locked or in Demo Mode, or the bake circuit can't start. The single cause to check first is lost household power, usually a tripped breaker or blown household fuse.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the breaker

Check the range or wall-oven breaker in your home panel. If it's tripped, reset it once, then turn the oven on again. If it trips again or won't stay on, leave it off and call an electrician. Whirlpool also lists a 30-second power-down at the breaker as a basic reset for an electric oven.

  2. Think back to a power outage

If the oven shows F9 or F9 E0 after an outage, turn the breaker off for 1 minute, turn it back on, then watch the display for 1 minute. Whirlpool notes this code can appear after line noise from an outage, or if keys were pressed during the 10-second power-up delay. If the code comes back, turn the breaker off and have a qualified electrician check the supply.

  3. Check Control Lock

Look for Control Lock on the keypad or display. On many Whirlpool controls, holding the marked key or key group for 3 seconds turns the lock off. If the panel beeps but won't start bake, this is a common owner-level miss.

  4. Check Demo Mode and Delay Start

Demo Mode can make the display act normal while the oven won't heat or start a real cycle. Also press Cancel, then start Bake again, because a Delayed Start setting can hold the oven until a later time.

  5. Look at the outlet area

If this is a plug-in range, don't pull it out if the cord is tight or the floor is slick. Look for black marks, melted plastic, or a loose-looking receptacle. If you see damage, stop and call an electrician.

  6. If it was just installed, suspect the connection

A new electric range that won't start may have a cord or terminal-block issue. Whirlpool says the strain relief, wire locations, and terminal nuts have to be correct. Have the installer or an electrician verify it.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Terminal block and supply powerA technician checks the cord, strain relief, terminal screws, and wire placement, then meters the supply at the terminal block or receptacle. Burned lugs, loose nuts, melted insulation, or missing proper range voltage point away from the oven parts and toward the supply connection.
Bake or broil elementOn an electric oven, the element is inspected for blistering, holes, or a section that stays dark during a heat call. With power disconnected, the technician tests continuity through the element; an open element is failed.
Gas oven igniterOn a gas Whirlpool oven, the technician starts a bake cycle and watches the ignition system. A weak glow, no spark on a spark-ignition model, visible damage, buildup around the igniter, or ignition attempts with no flame points to an ignition, gas supply, or safety-valve problem that needs service.
Thermal fuseThe thermal fuse is tested with power disconnected. A fuse with no continuity cuts power to the oven circuit, so the control may light while the oven still won't start.
Electronic oven control, clock or timerAfter supply power and loads test good, the technician commands Bake or Broil and checks whether the control sends power out through the bake or broil relay. No output from the relay with proper input power and a valid command points to a failed control board.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Whirlpool oven that won't turn on?

Yes. Turn the oven breaker off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If F9 or F9 E0 appears after an outage, use a 1-minute breaker reset and watch the display for 1 minute. If the code returns, turn the breaker off and have a qualified electrician check the supply.

Why do the stove burners work, but the oven won't turn on?

On an electric range, the surface elements and oven circuits can fail in different places. The oven may have a bad bake element, failed control relay, thermal fuse issue, or burned terminal connection. On a gas range, the cooktop can light while the oven igniter has failed.

Is Control Lock the same as Demo Mode?

No. Control Lock blocks keypad input, so the oven may beep or ignore start commands. Demo Mode lets the control show features while the oven doesn't run a real heat cycle.

Should I use the oven if I smell gas?

No. Don't try another bake cycle or light any appliance. Don't touch electrical switches or use a phone inside. Leave the area and call your gas supplier from outside. If you can't reach them, call the fire department.

Is this still a warranty issue?

Check the Whirlpool paperwork or the purchase record for coverage dates. A repair company can diagnose the failure, but warranty authorization usually has to go through Whirlpool or the seller listed on your documents.
