5d Whirlpool washer code: what it means and how to fix it
Your Whirlpool washer may pause, add water, take longer than normal, or leave the door locked while 5d, Sd, or Sud is on the display. This page explains what that code means, what you can safely check first, and what a technician tests if the code keeps coming back.

The 5d Whirlpool washer code is the same suds fault Whirlpool also shows as Sd or Sud, meaning the washer sees too many suds or too much drag while it tries to drain and spin. The single most common cause is too much detergent, the wrong detergent, or a detergent pac that's too large for the load.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Let the suds routine finish
If the washer is still running, let it continue. Whirlpool washers will pause the cycle, add water, and extend rinsing to break down suds before they try to spin again.
- Check the detergent amount
Use only HE detergent, then dose it by the bottle label for load size and soil level. Watch the concentration mark too, because 4x or 8x liquid uses much less than older 2x detergent.
- Think about pacs and bleach
A large detergent pac can be too much for a small load. Some thick liquid chlorine bleach products, often labeled no-splash or easy-pour, can also foam more than regular liquid bleach.
- Look at the drain hose if you can reach it
Check for a sharp bend or crushed spot behind the washer. The hose should enter the standpipe only about 4.5 inches, with the standpipe about 39 to 96 inches from the floor.
- Rebalance the load
Bunched sheets, one bulky item, or a packed tub can make the washer sense drag during spin. Remove some items or spread the load out, then try a drain and spin cycle with no detergent.
- Reset it once
Press Pause/Cancel twice or Power once if your controls respond. If the code stays, remove power for 60 seconds, then restart; if 5d returns, there is still a suds, drain, sensing, or drive problem.
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Hard water makes this more likely
Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Is 5d the same as Sd or Sud on a Whirlpool washer?
Yes. On many Whirlpool displays, Sd can look like 5d, and both point to the same suds fault.
Should I reset the washer?
A reset is fine once. Clear the display with Pause/Cancel or Power if the controls respond, or remove power for 60 seconds; if the code returns, the washer is still seeing suds, slow drain, bad sensing, or spin drag.
Why did 5d show up on a small load?
Small loads can foam a lot if the detergent dose or pac size is meant for a larger load. HE detergent concentration matters too, especially with 4x or 8x liquid.
Can a clogged drain cause a 5d code?
Yes. If water can't leave fast enough, suds stay in the tub and the washer may keep trying to rinse them out before it spins.
Is this a door lock problem?
Usually no. The door may stay locked because the washer is still in a suds reduction or drain routine, though a technician may release the lock safely if wet clothes are trapped inside.
