F21 Whirlpool washer code: what it means and how to fix it

Your Whirlpool washer may stop mid-cycle with F21 on the display, wet clothes in the drum, or water that won't pump out. This page explains what that code means, what you can safely check first, and what a technician tests if the simple checks don't clear it.

Straight answer

The F21 Whirlpool washer code means the washer took too long to drain the water from the tub. The single most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter, often called the coin trap or lint trap.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Press Pause/Cancel, then reset power

Press Pause/Cancel to stop the cycle and let the washer try to drain. If the code stays, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, then try Drain & Spin. This helps only when the control is stuck, so keep checking if water remains in the drum.

  2. Look for heavy suds

If you see foam, the washer may be fighting suds instead of moving water. Use only HE detergent, use less on the next load, and run Rinse & Spin with no detergent after the suds settle. A Sud or Sd code before F21 is a strong clue.

  3. Check the drain hose you can see

Pull the washer out enough to see the hose at the back without straining it. Straighten kinks, remove sharp bends, and make sure it isn't crushed behind the washer. The hose should be held in the standpipe with the U-shaped form so water can flow out normally.

  4. Check the house drain or laundry sink

If the standpipe, utility sink, or nearby drain backs up while the washer tries to drain, the washer may be fine. The water has nowhere to go. That points to a plumbing clog instead of a washer part.

  5. Know where the coin trap is

On many Whirlpool Duet front-load washers, the round white pump cleanout sits behind the lower front area, so it isn't always an owner-access part. If your model has a small cleanout door shown in the manual, unplug the washer first, set towels and a shallow pan down, then open it slowly because trapped water can pour out. Repair experience puts a packed filter at about 60% of F21 cases.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pump filter and pump inletRemove the lower access as a service step, catch standing water, then pull the coin trap and inspect the pump inlet. A blocked one may have coins, bobby pins, lint mats, small socks, underwear, or brown sludge packed in the sump path.
Drain hose and standpipeCheck the hose for crushing, lint plugs, mineral buildup, or a kink from being pushed against the wall. Verify the standpipe setup is in range, commonly 39 to 96 inches high on these units, and check for a house drain that backs up during drain.
Drain pumpCommand a drain cycle and listen for a steady pump hum. A technician checks for 120 volts at the pump connector during drain; voltage present with no pumping or a stalled impeller points to a bad pump, while no voltage sends the diagnosis back toward wiring or control.
Pressure switch air tube and air chamberInspect the small pressure tube for water, suds residue, or blockage, then check the rear tub air chamber or side port for sediment. If the pump starts then stops while water is still in the tub, the pressure signal may be lying to the control.
Pressure switch and central control boardTest the pressure switch for a continuity change as pressure is applied to the air port. If the switch and drain system check good, verify the control sends pump voltage and reads the pressure circuit correctly before replacing the board.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset clear the F21 code on a Whirlpool washer?

Sometimes. Press Pause/Cancel, then unplug the washer for 5 minutes and try Drain & Spin. If F21 returns, the washer is still draining too slowly.

Why do I see Sud or Sd before F21?

That usually means too much detergent or the wrong detergent made heavy suds. Suds can slow the pump enough to trigger F21. Use HE detergent and a smaller amount.

Can I open the pump filter myself?

Only if your owner's manual shows a user cleanout door. Many Duet units hide the coin trap behind a lower panel, so a technician is safer if you can't reach it without taking panels off.

Is F21 the same as F02?

On Whirlpool front-load washers, F21 and F02 both point to long drain time. The checks are the same: suds, drain hose, house drain, pump filter, pump, then pressure sensing.

Is a Whirlpool washer with F21 worth repairing?

Usually, yes, if the washer is otherwise solid and the fault is in the drain path. If an older washer also has bearing noise, leaks, or board faults, replacement may make more sense.
