Kenmore washer code dE: what it means and what to check
A Kenmore washer with dE may click, refuse to start, stop early, or leave the door locked after a cycle. This page explains what that code means on LG-built Kenmore washers, how to separate Whirlpool-built 110 models that use different lock codes, what you can safely check, and what a technician tests next.

Kenmore washer code dE means the control isn't satisfied that the door or lid is closed. On some LG-style front-load models, that also includes the lock signal. If the code returns after you clear the door area, the lock or lid-lock assembly is a common failure.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Close the door firmly and restart
Open the door or lid, move clothing away from the latch area, then close it with steady pressure. Several owner reports trace dE or DE1 to the door simply not being fully shut.
- Look at the latch and strike
Use a flashlight to check for a cracked strike, bent latch tab, lint, detergent residue, or a small item caught where the lock grabs. Don't force the door if it's locked.
- Reduce an overloaded load
A packed washer can push against the door or lid and keep the lock from proving closed. Remove a few items, close the door again, then try a drain and spin or rinse and spin cycle.
- Power reset the washer
Unplug the washer for five minutes, plug it back in, then press Power and try a new cycle. This can clear a control hiccup after a power interruption or after the washer tried to lock at the wrong time.
- Check the full model prefix
Kenmore model numbers matter. A 796 prefix follows an LG-style door or lid code set, while many 110 models follow Whirlpool lid-lock fault codes such as F5 E1 or F5 E2 instead of plain dE.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
- Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I reset a Kenmore washer dE code?
Yes. Unplug it for five minutes, then plug it back in and try a new cycle. If dE returns right away, the washer is still seeing a door or lid lock fault.
Is dE the same as IE on a Kenmore washer?
No. dE points to the door or lid lock circuit. IE is a fill or water inlet type code on models that use that code set, so the checks are different.
Why does my Kenmore washer click twice, then show dE?
That click-click pattern often means the lock is being commanded but the washer isn't getting a closed or locked signal back. The lock assembly, strike alignment, wiring, or control input has to be checked.
Does this apply to both front-load and top-load Kenmore washers?
Yes, with a model-prefix check. LG-built 796 front-load machines and some 796 top-load machines can show dE, while many Whirlpool-built 110 top-load machines report lid trouble as F5 E1, F5 E2, F5 E3, or F5 E4.
Can I keep pressing Start when dE appears?
If the washer starts after a second press, the lock may be slow or wearing out. Don't slam the door; check the latch area, run a reset, then have the lock tested if the code repeats.
