Kenmore washer not draining: what to check first
Your Kenmore may finish a cycle with water in the tub, hum without moving water, or stop before spin. This page helps you sort a clogged filter or hose from a bad pump, lid switch, door lock, or control.

A Kenmore washer not draining means water can't leave the tub during the drain or spin part of the cycle. On many front-load Kenmore washers, a common cause is a clogged pump filter, often called the coin trap.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Unplug the washer and control the water
Unplug the washer before you touch the drain area. If the tub is full, let hot water cool first, then use a cup, wet vac, or the machine's small drain hose if it has one, because opening the filter can release a lot of water.
- Clean the front-load pump filter
If your front-load Kenmore has a small user access door near the lower front, put towels and a shallow pan under it, then turn the round filter cap counterclockwise. Pull out lint, coins, hair ties, and small socks. After cleaning, look at the little pump impeller behind the filter and confirm it can move in small magnetic steps without forcing it.
- Listen for the top-load lid switch click
On many older Kenmore/Whirlpool-built top-loaders, the washer can wash normally, then sit dead when it should drain or spin. Close the lid slowly and listen for a clear click where the lid striker meets the switch; no click or a broken plastic striker points to a lid switch problem.
- Look at the drain hose behind the washer
Pull the washer out only as far as the cord and hoses allow. Look for a crushed corrugated hose, a sharp bend at the wall, or lint sludge at the standpipe opening; the standpipe height has to match the model manual, and many Kenmore front-load specs top out at 96 inches.
- Check for suds and a blocked house drain
Too much detergent can leave heavy foam that slows draining, especially in HE front-load machines. If the washer drains into plumbing shared with a sink, a slow house drain can make the washer act clogged even when the pump is trying to work.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
- Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Will a reset make a Kenmore washer drain again?
A reset can clear a stalled cycle, so unplug the washer for a few minutes, plug it back in, then choose drain and spin. If the pump only hums or the washer stops again, the problem is likely a clog, switch, pump, or control fault.
Where is the filter on a front-load Kenmore washer?
Many front-load models have a small access door near the lower front with a drain hose and a round filter cap. Some models hide the filter behind a lower service cover, so stop if there isn't a user access door or you don't want water on the floor.
Why does my top-load Kenmore wash but not drain?
On many older Kenmore/Whirlpool-built top-loaders, the lid switch is only used for drain and spin. A cracked striker or failed switch can make the washer think the lid is open, so it won't move into that part of the cycle.
Is a Kenmore washer not draining still covered by warranty?
Check the model and serial tag, then check your warranty paperwork or retailer account before opening the machine. If it's covered, use the warranty path so a claim isn't denied for prior disassembly.
Can I keep running drain and spin if the pump hums?
Don't keep trying for long. A humming pump with no water movement usually means a clogged filter, jammed impeller, or failed pump, and repeated attempts can overheat the pump.
